What is the proper procedure for applying painted SS stripes over clearcoat/basecoat modern paint systems? With a maximum of 12 hours allowed between color coat and clear coat, how is one to shoot the contrasting stripes? Is it possible to mask off the stripes and wet sand the areas to be painted after the clearcoat has been applied to the base color? Then paint the stripes, unmask and clear the entire hood and trunk?

When I helped apply the strip stencils to my 442 hood, the color coat had been applied and cured for a couple of days then we laid out the stencils masked the rest of the hood then shot the stripes. After that the clear was applied over the whole hood then sanded and buffed. results were great. Stripes stencils were obtained from "Stencils And Stripes"

that sounds good except the part about the basecoat curing a couple days.you should clear the basecoat within 24 hours or you could have an adhesion problem with the following coats.

Sikkens state clearly in their product sheets that basecoat can be masked with tape (for two tone systems) after 2 hours. Shurely not all brands are the same, but this ought to give a good indication.
