I was looking to buy a carpet kit for my 70 chevelle, originally a 4-speed car, I read in previous posts, I need a carpet kit for the 4-speed hump, I looked up the ground up site, and called NPD they only show one carpet kit for both, can I get away with a regular carpet? I don't plan on going with a console, I'm putting a automatic in it with a b&m shifter any advice would be appreciated. Jim

As far as I know all of the carpet you buy is cut to fit with or without a console. I wish they made it pre cut for a console, it would make the job a little easier.

from what I understand it's not the console thats the problem it's the hump thats welded in for the shifter that kind of distorts the standard carpet. The car was equiped with a console originally I think I can cut a slot around the console bracket and let it stick out I hate to cut off any of the original parts in case I come across a consol and want to install it later. By the way whats a original consol go for and are the stock type auto shifters decent? Jim

While there may only be one part number for the carpet kit, any time in the past I have ordered carpeting (from several different vendors, but it all was ACC carpeting) they want to know if you have an automatic or 4 speed.

I have never heard that the stock horseshoe shifter was anything but adequate except perhaps for the serious minded racer. The stock 4-speed shifter (Muncie) left a bit more to be desired, racer or not. As far as prices for an original console... I've seen them go on ebay for between $100 and $500. Most folks seem to not like the reproductions, though I have never examined one. I found mine locally for $75... needed a few minor repairs, but looks and functions very nicely. I bought my carpet from OPG and had to persuade it to fit around the console hump to my satisfaaction.

Yes! Ground Up restoration should have exactly what you’re looking for. I have the same kit in my '67 Elcamino. I modified my floor/transmission tunnel so the B&M shifter would reside in the same location as a manual shifter.
The carpet IS different than any other.
It is important you tell them your requirements;
Bench seat
Manual floor shifter
NO Console!

I second Cardiac...use Ground up. I put new carpet in my 70 Chevelle with bucket seats, 4 sp and no console. Was nicely shaped for the hump and simply cut a hole in the center of the hump hole (no laughing) and worked toward the edges of the hump.
