: Puting a 0SS bumber pad on to a bumper
61dragon Mar 6th, 05, 11:56 PM Hi everybody,
I need to get a new rear bumper and SS bumper pad for my 1970 Chevelle.
I want to know if anyone has bought the bumpers froom OPG and what was the quality like on the bumpers. I have heard that the bumpers are thinner than the originals.
Last but most important question, how hard is it to glue the SS bumper pad to the rear bumper?
Are there any secrets to doing this?

Any information is helpful.
KEnt..
Yes, repros are thinner. You can get bumper with pad already glued on.
JimD Mar 7th, 05, 10:48 AM I just did this a couple months ago, the bumper i got was a Goodmark repro. It does seem thinner than my old beat up origional, but it looks/fit nice. I don't know what bumpers OPG carries, but my bumper pad came from there. I didn't care for the "special adhesive" supplied with it, just looked very thin and...long story short, i didn't use it. I opted to use some Urethane adhesive from my local paint supply store. From working with that stuff before, i know my pad isn't gonna peel off, in fact its on there so tight, i'd probably ruin it trying to remove it.
I lined up the pad where i wanted it and marked with a dry erasable marker, turned it over and layed a thin bead about 3/4 inch from the edge all away around and a couple more in the center.
Then i repositioned it inside my marks and then clamped it up with some wood blocks and clamps every few inches and every corner. I left it to cure up over night.
Last tip , clean off any adhesive that squeezes out before it sets up.

Had my original re-crhomed, used the new pad from Ground Up but I purchased the specail glue from a company called Proud Road - number is 800-624-7561. The glue has a shelf life so you have tom use it within a certain time. The pad is on since October or so - seems to be on very well. They give detailed instructions with the glue specifcally for the bumper pad application for the 70.
I imagine though the urethane works well too, didn't think of that at the time, also that urethane they sell at auto glass places - I would bet that would works too as I used that to glue my quarter chrome strips to the rear windows - great adhesion.
Hope this helps.

Midnight Marauder Mar 7th, 05, 12:49 PM Black 3m super weatherstip adhesive works good, too. Available at a parts house near you.
Have seen several attached with this, all were done years ago and have held up fine and not lifted. Dont use any other color than the black though, since if it squishes a bit you can trim it back and you wont see the adhesive at all. Yellow, obviously, would show up in the area around the lip of the pad between bumper and pad.
Chirp08 Mar 7th, 05, 3:29 PM BumperBoyz from california have a stand at englishtown, and im sure most other huge shows. They take original bumpers and knock the dings etc. out and triple chrome plate them. I traded my old ones for some new ones, cost me $570.00 total, plus new bolts, deffinantly worth it. They were originals so they bolted right up and look awesome, plus they have a lifetime warranty.

Stay, no, RUN away from "the boyz" bumpers. Personal experience, plus conversations with MANY disgruntled customers have soured me on their work. The chrome is very thin and tarnishes AND peels in short order. Use Tri City Plating. They offer a beautiful product AND a lifetime guarantee on their work...IN WRITING.
Chris R Mar 7th, 05, 8:12 PM Im not going to get into a bashing thing about bumper boyz, but I have to agree with MalibuJerry. I have heard many bad things about them also. I dont have any first hand expierence with them. I have talked to customers of thiers before too.
Chris.
