: Help -- Project purchase cost???
winchster Mar 2nd, 05, 6:58 PM I have found the car I have always wanted, but it is in VERY bad shape. My question is this, how much should a guy expect to pay for a '67 malibu base model, 4 wheel drum, needs 2 quarters, a door, and a floor from firewall to rear bumper. I mean this cars floor is gone. I offered to let him keep the buckets, 4spd shifter, and console if he would come down from his $2500. He can also keep the '82 350 and the original 4 spd. (I'm going to use a T-56 6 spd) So guys how much??
I think $2500 is way to much. Don't get in a hurry take your time and find something that is WORTH rebuilding GOOD LUCK
winchster Mar 2nd, 05, 7:10 PM P.S. I told him I would give him $700 for the car minus the drive train. Then I told him he could keep the buckets, console, and shifter if he made me a better deal. I'm thinking about $400.00 for the body.
Mike72ss Mar 2nd, 05, 7:12 PM Not to seem negative, but I would save some more money and get a car that has a better body. By the time you put all the money in sheet metal and other material, you could probably had a better foundation to begin with, especially if you can't do your own work. It takes a lot of patient to find the "right" project. Good luck.
Mike
YenkoChevelle69 Mar 2nd, 05, 7:27 PM I'd give him 1000 for all of it.
fast67vellen2o Mar 2nd, 05, 7:29 PM You are going to want those buckets and console later down the restoration.
winchster Mar 2nd, 05, 7:34 PM Yenko, Even with it needing every single floor piece from front to back?
As for the buckets, I prefer proseats over the originals. I know to a bunch of guys that is blasphemy but I'm not looking for a concours car. I want a fun to drive every day chevelle.
Tom Mobley Mar 2nd, 05, 7:43 PM The nicer car you start with, the more likely it is that your project will ever get finished.
Starting out with something as rough and incomplete as what you're looking at is a bad idea, IMO, unless you're a professional in the restoration business who does this for a living. Let somebody else buy that rust bucket and struggle with it for years. Can you say "bottomless money pit?"
Wait and save your money until you can buy something worth working on.

OrrieG Mar 2nd, 05, 11:00 PM What tom said...you'll get halfway into it and wish you had spend 2-3K more and got one with a better body.
bob_adamsky Mar 3rd, 05, 12:41 PM Boy do I know how you feel about THAT car. But Starting with something that rough will take a long time and even more money than that(meaning a bunch) to get where you want.Thats not a totally bad idea if you have the time and money, but you wont be driving it anytime soon.
When I bought my 66SS 4 years ago I thought maybe 2 years tops.Well its closer now but with the money and time spent,I could have been driving and enjoying a Chevelle if I would have waited and saved a little more.
winchster Mar 3rd, 05, 5:17 PM So where do I start looking to find a chassis I can use as a good starting point. I need a titleable car or in Texas it will end up as a 2005 - 66 or 67 chevelle and require all kinds of crap on it. I know I can find some on Ebay, not quite sure about that but where else do I look? I'm not going to be original or concours, I'll be street-rod with it so I don't really need a viable interior, other than dash and maybe rear seat.
bob_adamsky Mar 3rd, 05, 9:45 PM Keep watching your local paper, local cruise in,car show, put the word out that you are looking and take your time.
Found my 66ss in local paper as "66 chevelle body"
Marci Mar 3rd, 05, 9:58 PM I looked on E-Bay for about 6 months, and then happened to look in the local paper one day and found my '72 Malibu. My advice is drive around town and rural areas, looking in people's back yards, etc. You'll see one. Be patient though, you'll get people who are 105 years old and swear they're going to "get her running someday"
Marci Mar 3rd, 05, 10:01 PM BTW--You don't want to make it look like you're casing the joint, they'll probably run ya off with a 12 gauge.. :D
Second_chance_SS Mar 3rd, 05, 10:04 PM WOW...if that's the best body you can find in TX, I'm shocked !!! We northerners look down there for our stuff. I've seen better bodies than that on eBay in AZ and NM for a few hundred dollars. As long as you don't need an actuall SS to start with, you should be able to come up with a much better starting point for less $$. Like the others have said, be patient grasshopper !! :D
crazychevelle Mar 3rd, 05, 10:22 PM keep looking. It took me almost a year to find the right car for the right price. It is well worth the wait. I had the pleasure of driving mine for the summer i got it but now its in the garage about to get taken apart. The body and chassis are so good i just might get it on the road again for some fall time driving before the winter.
winchster Mar 3rd, 05, 10:44 PM Thanks guys, I'm not looking for an SS. As far as I am concerned anything but a 4dr will be fine. I want the body style, everything I plan on putting into it will be far from stock: 4whl disc, 5 or 6 spd, roddoors interior, etc. etc. I have been building hot rods for about 15 years, and I really want a '66 or '67 chevelle. Have owned both Monte's and Cutlass, but haven't been able to find that ONE car, I think I've owned 30 or so since I started driving. Again thanks for the help, I'll be hanging around and looking over the posts for information. By the way, most of the "project" cars I find on Ebay are going for upwards of $4500.
Tom Mobley Mar 4th, 05, 12:12 AM You're in Ft Worth? You should be able to find something local. Forget ebay. Look locally, you'll find something. There is just no possible justification for sinking thousands into a rust bucket in Texas. If you lived in Michigan you'd be stuck, but not in the SW.

SLOPAR Mar 6th, 05, 12:33 AM Defintely pass on that car unless you can do all the major metal work yourself. I have a stack of receipts that came from impatience and a misunderstanding of how much it cost to fix metal on older cars now. It did not help that the owner we bought out 66 from screwed me over big time but I never saw the car other than pictures and went on that I thought he was a decent person. Slow down and look locally or atleast within diving distance. Ebay is fine for some things, but for what you are looking for I think the price may get a little out of line.
Good luck,
John Weaver
gigem Mar 6th, 05, 12:36 AM If I was going to restore the car you described, HE'D have to pay ME 2500 to use it as a starting point.
You can do better.
