Has anyone seen the new oil out by Mobil 1. It is called Mobile 1 "extended performance." Cost about a $1.50 more than the Mobil 1 older synthic line. Has anyone used it and is there a benefit over the "regular" Mobil 1 line?

I use it and it works well. They added more synthetic to it. Depends on your ideas on oil-most people don't have a clue about oil and what it does for the engine and other fluids such as synthetic transmission fluids-gear oils. They worry about the cost. Engines are expensive-use the best that you can afford. Redline is another great oil-$$$$

Both Mobil 1 products are 100% synthetic. The extended is described by Mobil as:

Mobil 1 Extended Performance formulas are designed specifically for today's longer service intervals and are guaranteed to protect for up to 15,000 miles or one year.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance has a unique formulation with boosted level of protection and performance. These formulations with the Advanced SuperSyn System contain 50 percent more SuperSyn, 36 percent more anti-wear additives, and 37 percent more cleaning agents than the current Mobil 1.

I have put this in my wifes Mercury. It came from the factory with 5-30 synthetic. and is's to be changed every 6K. She dose not drive 6 k a year so Iopted for the added use life..

At the cost of todays Motors. and parts.. Oil's cheap insurance.IMO.

snake oil ? Fancy marketing ?

Aaron, does your question mean perhaps would there be any benefit for you in using this oil. We'd have to know what kind of car would you use it in? What kind of service? e.g all highway miles or many very short trips? What does your car's manufacturer recommend regarding oil and oil filters? Do you have plenty of discretionary income that you wouldn't mind spending on luxuries, because synthetic motor oils are pure luxuries (of a sort) for most applications.

I'm using it my chevelle. The chevelle has a zz4 motor. I'm have been using the 5w 30 "orignal" Mobil 1. The car is driven on alot of short trips 5 to 10 miles and some long trips 40 mile trips. Weekend crusier which gets used about 4 days a week in the summer.

The concern I have is in the fuel contamination. How is it going to last 15k miles, and not be full of contaminants ... regardless of if the oil itself could last that long?

I am Old School to Neal.. I called Ford Morte Co. when I got the wife's new car. 7K out of the BOX.. what about break in,, seating new parts, what about fuel I say...
NOT a problem was there response !

So I dumped it a 500 MI. and started new Mobil 1 for the first ans now the 2nd use the Extended and will dump ever year.. Wife dose not do 6k or 7 K a year....

A friends an AMSOIL dealer.. a number of Locals with the 7.3 Diesel's have switched to Amsoil and there two filter kit... at 16 quarts of a oil a change.. They send there oil to Amsoil for testing , and Amsoil tell them when to change it ?
one guy got 17,000 on his so far ?

Its got more additives. Go to Mobil web site and read their pitch. As to "...a benefit..." There are definitely three benefits: more profit for Exxon Mobil; more profit for their distributors; more profit for their retailers. If I was in your situation--as you described--then about the only benefit I would expect would be less frequent oil changes. Whether that would save me money or not--I'd have to make some assumptions and estimates and then pencil it out. Since I derive psychic satisfaction from seeing that hot, nasty, smelly, contaminated, used oil draining away, and the pristine WalMart SuperTech Universal 15W-40 pouring into the oil filler opening in my starboard rocker cover , Less frequent oil changes would be one disincentive for me to use this new, expensive, world-beating oil (big wide grin)

i once got 12,000 miles out of regular Mobil 1 0w-30 in my Lumina with the DOHC 3.4- mostly because it was winter and it was cold out there- and when i drained it, it still looked better than Valvoline out of the bottle.
the 10w-30 Mobil 1 stands up pretty good to the turbo 3.8 in the T-Type- after driving it all last summer, i drained it and it looked and smelled pretty good. when i first got the car running, i put 10w-30 Valvoline in it because the car sat for 12 years and i didn't want to find leaky gaskets and what not with oil that costs almost $5 a quart, and after 200 miles, the oil was cooked black and ran like water.
now, i run 10w-30 Mobil 1 in everything and change it every 5,000 miles or 6 months.
so, in a nutshell- the new "extended performance" Mobil oil is just a money grab that is aimed at the same ignorant consumers that have been buying the Quaker State "long life" or "high mileage" oils in the cool clear bottles.
