View Full Version : Why does my car sag left?

Just put new springs in the front and back of my 70 because it leaned bad on the drivers side. It still measures an inch and a half lower on both the front and rear from the ground to the the wheel opening. I think it is worse now than before. It is an AZ car so the frame is not rusted anywhere. Its all stock except for the Southside Bars on it. What could be making it lean so bad? Thanks, Dave

Have you replaced the body mount bushings? They get old and will collapse. My car leans to the right about 1/2". Replaced body bushings and it didn't help. I've got all new springs in mine too. A front end shop told me to try swapping the springs from side to side. Will be trying that this week. Will do rear first and if that doesn't change anything then I won't mess with the front. Only other thing that I know of is to shim the body at the bushing locations.

Have you checked the body bushings? They might
be collapsed/eroded-away on the drivers side.
I would check the frame height at all four wheel locations.

Do you have an airbag in the right rear? Do you
have rear drag springs? Both of these preload the
left front.

The frame is lower about an inch on the drivers side front and back too so I don't think it is the body bushings. The new springs are suppose to be around an inch higher than OEM springs. This really has me baffled.

Yes it could be the body bushings, Also make sure the springs are fully seated in the spring recievers. They have grooves in them and if the ends of the springs aren't in there, well you know the rest.

goodluck

Dave,
I would give the springs some time to settle in before you make any decisions. Have you driven the car much since changing them ?

No, I have not driven much since the spring changeout. It just seems like 1 1/2" is quite a bit. I think it was around an inch lower before I had them replaced.

Maybe swap the springs on the left with the right side. If the sag moves over, you'll have your answer.

I put new springs in the front and it helped . The front is ok. The rear on the other hand I have done it all to it and it will not ever sit right. It sags to the left. I was told and also read that this is a chevelle problem and it will always sag even with the correct replacement springs.

Make sure that you front springs are seated correctly. Mine are not and the car sits high on the pass front. From what I've read on here, the front spring should be turned so the end of the spring coil falls between the 2 locating holes in the spring pocket on the lower control arm.

My 69 is the same only about an 3/4 " also. Haven't been able to figure it out. Changed springs etc. also have used air bags to try and level it out. The only thing I can think of that could have caused it,is that the car was raced for ten yrs. and maybe the body is torqued a little. Maybe it has something to do with twist from something like that. Hope someone can come up with some kind of definite answer.

98% of the time its in the front end, cuz thats where all the weight is, I'd make sure the srings are seated properly and if so swap the springs side to side and see what happens, its a painful job,but someone has to do it :D

Found 1 of the rear springs out of pocket. That leveled it up closer but it still is out about 1/2". Shop says thats the best they can get it without putting it on a frame machine. I can't see the cost of doing that for a 1/2" on a driver car. Guess I'll just dig a little hole in the ground where I park at Chevellabration so it sits level there :D

Don't know if anyone one else tried this but my sons Chevelle sat low left in the rear with the new springs installed on all four corners. For some reason we removed the front sway bar to work on the car and all of the sudden I noticed it was level! To correct this (cheaply) I just added a 1/4" shim under one side of the front sway bar where it mounts to the frame and it leveled the car right out. Just something else to look for.
