Ok, so I have a nice 69 hard top chevelle :D lined up for me to pick up, but I'm having a big problem with getting a title. I talk to the RMV (Mass.) and they said I had to have the owners title in order for me to obtain a title. Now it gets to being an issue, the current owner is a deputy sheriff and says I won't need a title, just the bill of sale to obtain a title since the vehicle is so old. Also the vehicle came from georgia, and from what I know they don't require a title for old vehicles (could be wrong). Anyways, to make things simple, can I just use a Bill of Sale to get myself a title or do I need the current owners title so I can get mine? Can anyone please help me sort this mess out? Also this guy isn't trying to scam me, he's offered to refund my $$$ if it doesn't work out. Thanks,

Nick

If the current owner has a title,I don't see a problem,or if he has the car currently registered.
Usually,most states don't require a title for a car built before 1980

I've sold a lot of vintage cars to people in Mass. All that they have ever needed is a bill of sale and a current registration. No problems ever.

I think thats my problem there, the guy never registered it. He doesn't want to pay the sales tax, might have to do a little nudging to get this guy to get it. Thanks for all your help,

Let me get this straight...

A deputy sheriff bought this car and never paid taxes on it?

And now he's gotten you and the former owner to agree to sign a fraudulent document saying the the previous owner sold the car to you?

Nice... graemlins/sad.gif

The current owner never got plates for it, thus never drove it, making it just something taking up space in the driveway. And ethics wise, I personally don't see anything horrible, the state is going to get its tax money and I'm gonna have my Chevelle, but thats just my opinion on this it.

Well OK, but consider that the State collects tax every time the car is sold. In this case, the car sold twice but the tax is only going to be paid once.

Consider also an extreme case. What if the current owner ran someone over with the car or committed some other crime. Now the car comes back to you!

Good luck either way.

The cop could've at least just had the title put in his name w/o getting tags.

Well update again, the sale is off, there is no way I can get a title now. The state wants any piece of paper referring to registration paperwork, which I cannot get. This has just been a bigger and bigger headache as time has gone on. I dunno if he's crooked or what but hopefully he'll refund my $$$ (deal was sale would close once I obtained a title) or else its off to small claims court, crossin my fingers. Back to the search for a Chevelle for now, wish me luck.

Another way to do it completely legally is have the guy "sell" it to someone you know in NH(all you need is a bill of sale). Then have that someone you know register it in NH(all we need up here is a bill of sale to register for a car that old.)Then have that someone "sell" it to you. They provide the bill of sale and current registration transferring ownership to you and you're golden.

Thanks, I have only recently learned about this service, keep in mind that this is my first project car so i'd don't have a huge knowledge on this field of cars yet. Thanks again for your help.
