: Ground Up shipping?
Cecil Jan 29th, 05, 9:12 PM Just ordered a center drag link via the Ground Up website. At the end it said shipping not included, totaled my order and billed my card. I assume shipping is not free, so how and when do they calculate shipping and bill me? I sure don't want to pay for 2-day express or something on a part I don't need for a couple weeks...

You find out when you get you credit card bill! I was not real impressed with it either. Kept going from one page to the next expecting to find out what the shipping would be. Checked my card online the next day to find out it cost $9 to ship an $18 dollar 12oz part. I know they're the the site sponser but I think they need to do something about that. I've never had that happen with any other company.
BillK Jan 29th, 05, 10:37 PM Not an excuse for them not having it on thier web site but .... why don't you call them and find out ???????? That way there would be no confusion or reason to be upset. I would personally never make an online order without knowing the exact amount that the total was going to be.
ACES-70 Jan 29th, 05, 10:41 PM agreed,, also how would they know to give you the Team Chevelle discount,,, they have an 800 number,, call m up!!
Cameano Jan 30th, 05, 12:15 AM I've all but surrendered to the high shipping costs. Not a whole lot I can do about it, either. But it's a major point in the "move" column when I weigh whether or not I'm going to sell my home and move to somewhere in the southeast. Just a couple weeks ago, I paid $23 shipping for a quadrajet, through the U.S. mail, and actually, it was less than the $25.xx on the stamp. Then there was the $27.00 for the timing chain (special .010 line hone piece) for my Pontiac motor. Would you be happy with those prices? It'd probably been $20 tops for both of those if I were in the lower 48... I just can't wait to order my carpet, headliner, and package tray Monday. Some oversized boxes there. :( Hopefully, Ames Performance will do like they say they try to, put them together into 1 oversized box to save on shipping, instead of 2 or 3.
Rodeo73 Jan 30th, 05, 12:25 AM I wouldn't order unless I knew the exact amount either. Some places give free shipping if you spend over a certain amount, but for small stuff there is not a chance. :(
michael n mississippi Jan 30th, 05, 12:37 AM i choose npd for there honest shipping rates. nuff said
wilmaya Jan 30th, 05, 9:59 AM I have been happy with their shipping and rates. When I've recieved my order, I've always recieved an invoice. I'm in their zone so shipping at UPS's lowest rate. Plus the fact that if I order it early in the day I might see the package the next day thru Ground service. Considering the parts are in stock. Plus they do have free shipping on certain dollars spent with the exception of items that must be sent freight.
MalibuJerry350 Jan 30th, 05, 10:09 AM Center links are available at your local auto parts store. Why order from across the country? Moog and TRW are both available around here.
LeoP Jan 30th, 05, 11:19 AM What Jerry said.
kevin d Jan 30th, 05, 11:29 AM I've been very happy with GU and I don't think their shipping is expensive. They have always given me an "estimate" on my shipping. I have never ordered on line, always on the phone, and they can never tell me exactly what it will cost to ship anything. When NPD gives me a total, it is a total, not an "estimate". I just like to know what its going to cost.
circletrack Jan 30th, 05, 1:08 PM As I said in another post, I've ordered parts from GU for the last year or so and have been happy with just about everything. I ordered quarter panels a month ago and they called around to find the cheapest shipping possible wanting to save ME money! I was quite surprised they did that and would recommend them to anyone. In general, they use UPS and try to get the cheapest rates possible. It is frustrating when you order a $10 item and have to pay high shipping costs, but it happens all over...
daveseitz Jan 30th, 05, 1:17 PM I ordered $350 of stuff from Northern Tool and Equipment. The Promo was free shipping for orders over $250. I had it ordered through work and it didn't get placed till after the promo. It wound up costing $200 for shipping in total costs. I could have bought really good stuff from the Mac Tools guy for that much. Live and learn can be painfull. The worst part is the store is onlt about 5 miles out of my way.
SoCalRat Jan 30th, 05, 1:24 PM I would look for your order date and seek a refund from Northern if their promo was "Free"
Cecil Jan 30th, 05, 1:30 PM Will call tomorrow. Their Saturday hours are only until 2:00pm, which I missed by 17 minutes. Not a big deal...
Donnie1 Jan 30th, 05, 2:46 PM well, just to let you know Ground Up gives free shipping to Team Chevelle & ACES members. use the phone to place your order.
Herb Jan 30th, 05, 8:04 PM Donny, that's good info for new members.
I bought quarters, a trunk kit and a hood from NPD. Total shipping to my house was $23.50 and everything arrived in 3 days. I placed my order by phone and also found out they were having deals not posted on their web. For carbs and smaller stuff, I get my local speed shop to order for me. Usually it the same price or only a few $ more. Less than $20 shipping.
I would NEVER buy anything without a firm total cost.

I've ordered plenty in the past year and have never received FREE shipping and they well know I'm a TC and ACES member. If I'm supposed to receive free shipping, I have quite a chunk of change coming my way... We receive a 10% discount (sometimes more, sometimes less), but never free shipping.
Finally Jan 30th, 05, 9:36 PM I should add that I don't think GU cheated me on shipping costs. I know I couldn't get UPS to ship it that distance any cheaper. The only problem I have with it is you don't know the cost. I normally deal with NPD, not that they're better, just that I can pick the parts up and avoid all shipping. Don't want to bash GU, just think thats an area they could improve.
Hi-po SS 454 Jan 30th, 05, 10:36 PM WE luckily have a lot of Venders in the area, where I am able to buy over the counter and do a touchy feely thing with the part before you buy

Again, not once have I noticed any free shipping. A couple months back I ordered quarter panels and a trunk lid, I didn't receive any discount on the items and shipping was far from free...
EddieC67ss Feb 1st, 05, 8:21 PM I have ordered on an average 20/30 times a year from them over the past 4 years, I still have to give them my Team Chevelle # every time I order. It does not automatically go in the system.
rocks66ss Feb 1st, 05, 8:30 PM I'm sure glad I have other choices.

bri2203 Feb 1st, 05, 9:05 PM I just revcieved a small box that contained 2 sway bar bushings,4 bumpstops and 1 rear end cover bolt. They said it wighed 10.5 lbs!!!!!
it weighs no more then 6lbs and shipped was $9.00 for 38 bucks of parts!
I am pist, I got the wrong sway bar bushings and I am writing a note on it when i mail it back
ctrain22 Feb 3rd, 05, 12:46 AM I finf the worst for shipping costs is OPG. They are very high, and charge handling costs on top of shipping.I am fortunate that I live in the same town as NPD, so unless someone else is much cheaper, it doesn't pay for me to shop around.
Dwayne Martin Feb 4th, 05, 6:56 PM I am having the same problem. I tried to call them today to place an order. I called at least 30 times to the (866) 358-2277 and also the (203) 235-1200. I never did get anyone on the phone. The 866 number drops you off the line and you get voice mail on the 203 number. I went ahead an ordered online; hoping to eventually get them on the phone about the free shipping and/or discount. I'm probably going to spend around $5,000 over the next 6 months on this car; either with Ground Up or it's competitors. It's hard to do business with folks that you can't talk to. This was my first order with them, it may be my last.
Cecil Feb 4th, 05, 7:08 PM I sent them an email on Saturday when I placed the order, still haven't heard from them. I'm really liking NPD, the stuff I ordered from them has already arrived...
Dwayne Martin Feb 5th, 05, 1:53 PM I just found out that Ground Up closes at 2:00 on Fridays. That explains why I couldn't get in touch with them yesterday when I called so many times. I got in touch with them today; sounded like real nice folks.

Been using NPD for the last 8 years or so. Never had a problem. Because of their numerous warehouses, the order arrives quickly! I've ordered stuff on a Monday morning and have had it arrive Wednesday.
circletrack Feb 5th, 05, 3:24 PM You have to remember that Ground Up is in Connecticut, so a LONG ways away from most members, it's going to take more than a couple days to arrive. I ordered last week and was told it would take 3-5 business days, I don't think that's bad, especially since I'm in Wisconsin.
This is one of many reasons I will not order from them again.
I placed an online order with them. No shipping stated. Made me nervous. So I called them (which I felt guilty about. I mean isn't the whole reason for the online ordering to save them the expense of the 800 # ?), and asked what the shipping was going to be, as they were billing my card as well. The guy told me no more than $8. I said ok, that sounds good, even though I thought that was a little high.
Well guess what, $14 shipping. NEVER AGAIN.
And the upper control arm bumpstops I received were way too small. Wrong part.
By the time I figured calling them, sending the parts back and all that hassle, I chalked it up as a learning experience.
I ordered 3 of their catalogs online a few months ago. For me and to pass out to Chevelle friends. Never received even one of them. I wanted to give them one more chance and see if they had anything I couldn't live without. Poor service IMHO.
It's a shame really, but they don't get recommended by me to anyone.
So many companies are ripping their customers off by "padding" the shipping costs to make more $$.
It is one of my #1 peeves. I will not stand for it. I don't do it to my customers. To me it's like someone spitting in your face. They know there is not a damn thing you can do about it, so they take advantage of you for the extra $$ graemlins/sad.gif
