: 68 front end conversion to 69
Clint44 Jan 27th, 05, 3:57 PM As some of you might have noticed,my 69 El Camino has a 68 bumper, grill, etc. I'm not 100% sure if my front fenders are 68 or 69 now, though,as they have been shaved of all emblems, etc. I like the 68 front end but really want to convert it back to the 69 components I want it to have. If my front fenders are 68,is that going to create a big problem in changing out the grill, lights, etc?
As for bumpers, that should be an easy swap,,right?
Thanks for any input.
sinned Jan 27th, 05, 4:08 PM Clint, I thought of converting my 68 to a 69 front-end due to the availability of parts at the time. It was supposed to be a no-brainer, fenders are the same, header panel is the same, just need all the small peices. I know for sure that the eyebrows, grill, grill support, headlamp surrounds and grill extensions are different.
I know "somebody" who will take all the 68 stuff off your hands.
Clint44 Jan 27th, 05, 4:12 PM I knew I count on you for some help,my friend. If you're interested in any of my 68 stuff,I'll keep you in mind when I find new 69 parts for the car.
ACLineman Jan 27th, 05, 5:11 PM Clint,
look at my signature picture. It is a 69 with 68 fenders. You may have to drill holes for molding and marker lights etc. I did not, it already had them.
The only difference I know of, is the location of the marker lights.68 's are lower.
I liked the bigger 68 lights with engine size and just used 68's.
Clint44 Jan 27th, 05, 5:27 PM My marker lights have been shaved and filled,Harry. Have always wanted to run some SS-427 badges on the front & rear.(no comments from the anti-clone folks,,ok?)
Any comments about running a 68 bumper with 69 grill assembly? Kinda like the wider spacing on the 68's running lights a little better.
red68chevL Jan 27th, 05, 5:42 PM Actually there is no visual difference in the headlight bezels except blacking out the insides, it may be as simple as a bumper, turn signal lamps and housings, grill, grill extensions, and eyebrows (69s are way cheaper $$ than 68s). I believe the filler panel between the bumper and grill is the same as well. Doesnt sound tooooo painful to me.....
PS my guess is only the true 69 chevelle aficionado would notice about the bumper.
68lokomino Jan 27th, 05, 7:25 PM Clint IM interested in your parts for my 68. Let me know if your interested when you sale. IM also in Wichita Falls. graemlins/hurray.gif

As for the bumper,my car is such a "mutt" with all the mods I've made, that I doubt it would stand out very much. smile.gif

Sounds like we need together at the Iron Horse for a cold one and talk El Caminos. What part of town are you located? I'm in City View.
red68chevL Jan 27th, 05, 11:31 PM Clint,
Ebay or the classifieds here for the grill. NOS ones on ebay go for about $300. I've heard the repros are not "up to par" yet. They just began reproducing them last year. My guess is the eyebrows NOS will be the toughest to find.
Clint44 Jan 27th, 05, 11:49 PM Are the repro eyebrows decent quality? A friend of mine who restores Chevelles and El Caminos has an NOS 69 grill that said he might sell it to me.
Sounds like I need to start hitting the big swap meets around here.
