Is dropping in a Pertronix module the way to go to eliminate points?
Comments / suggestions welcomed.

I have a Pertronix #1181 (the original design and the only one to get IMO). Almost 6 years old and no problems.

Crane XR-i here. Don't hear about it as much as the others, but mines worked great for a couple years now. Has a rev limiter, too.

I have installed many PerTronix units in friends and customers cars, and, all of my engines with point type distributors, in the last 13yrs. The oldest that I have personal experience with, is in my 56 Vette (first installation) that I did back in 92. Its still sparking, and I have never had any complaints about any of the others I've installed. Yes, there are other electronic conversions out there for point type distributors, even some with one wire. They work fine. All of them that I am aware of use the Hall cell triggering system.
Those of you who have been around for a while will recall that Dave Ray (Ignitionman) was not a big fan of the PerTronix, and he makes his own version of an HEI conversion from a point type dist. Some people here have his conversions on their engines and are quite pleased with them.

My personal opinion on the PerTronix? I think it is a good product, and if installed properly (THAT SEEMS TO BE THE REAL SECRET), they are very dependable, long lasting and do provide a little hotter spark without the point bounce problems or degradation of points. Is the PerTronix a super duper, fire breathing ignition system? No. It is just a very good electronic conversion for points that does provide a little more fire power and never seems to miss a beat at higher RPMs.

I use mine to trigger a hidden MSD 6AL box. So I've got a hot spark and rev limiter with what appears to be a stock points type distributor.

Excellent post Tom (DZAUTO)

I ageee with everyting you stated. I think they are an excellent cost effective alternative to mechanical points and and condensor. Coupled with a "flame thrower" coil they get the job done and last.

I eneded up sitting on the side of the road in the middle of a 4th of July parade when my condensor failed. everybody pointed and laughed and they went by (it's a small town). Bought a Pertornix converion the next day.

BTW - I haven't heard the "HALL" term used in years. I engineered several systems to eliminate cam activated mechanical contacts using Hall-effect transistors in my early engineering days. They're pretty bullet proof.

thanks guys. Current points are pretty new, but I suspect next change will be pointless (no pun intended)
