View Full Version : HELP!!! desperate for body parts
68L79ELCAMINO Dec 30th, 04, 7:46 PM 68 el camino is at the body shop. its worse than expected. i need rear inner & outer wheelhouses. rear inner qtrs inner rockers would pay for nos stuff dont think repros are available. maybe i would be better off finding a good rear half of a 68-72. open for suggestions
RedSS454 Dec 30th, 04, 8:06 PM Unless the frame is bad, I suggest getting new/NOS body parts. Try looking for a parts car, check online, SS396.com and other vendors, and keep an eye out in your local paper. The other thing is that ad's are not allowed in these forums. Try looking in the free classifieds on the home page of Chevelles.com and possible posting a want ad their.

Chevl_Steve Dec 31st, 04, 2:26 AM I just bought repro inner fenders for my 69 Malibu Coupe and I wanted to leave the top part of the inners there for trunk lid alignmenet reasons. Besides, the top section was good.
I cut these new $100 each inner fenders in half ( not easy for me to do ) and welded them onto the existing fender about half way up. I have it welded and primed and it fit like a glove. You can't tell it was ever two parts, unless you look REALLY close. Anyone looking REALLY close at an inner fender is just looking too danged hard ;)
Most of these parts are available repro. If you are half way mechanically inclined, pull the Camino out of the body shop and save yourself a ton of money. Sure you'll have to learn alot, and it will be a long time before you finish, but the experiences along the journey are what makes the pride after you are done a lot different than if someone else had done it.
By the way, finding out it's in worse shape than you thought is a position many of us have been in. Count me as one that has a mid-west rust bucket..and "been there, done that!"....and am still doing it smile.gif

68L79ELCAMINO Dec 31st, 04, 10:52 AM Unfortunately many of these repro parts are for everything but el camino. my body man is very talented and can fabricate as needed. i'm thinking of finding a parts car.
DjD Dec 31st, 04, 11:22 AM OPG, Orignal Parts Group is all about El Caminos - you can almost build a complete car from their catalog, Classic Industries too and I'm sure the site sponsor, Ground Up has body part also. I don't understand why you don't think there are repro parts available...
Chevl_Steve Dec 31st, 04, 11:26 AM I hear ya DJD, most parts are available I believe. Is your body man telling you this Chris?
There's even a place that specializes in El Camino parts. I see it advertized in magazines.
While I don't have an El Camino, I know many parts are the same as Chevelles and there are many parts avilable.
Maybe your body man isn't aware of the repro market for older cars?
68L79ELCAMINO Dec 31st, 04, 11:38 AM its not him telling me this. i've researched it. I'm buying all the parts. The parts i need differ from chevelle. (rockers, inner & outer wheelhouses, inner qtrs, fuel tank support braces etc) unless i'm missing something, but these part descriptions say "all but el camino"
ACLineman Dec 31st, 04, 11:45 AM I have an extra kidney if that would help, Liver is pretty much shot though.
Oh wait, wrong post.....sorry
454Malibu Jan 1st, 05, 1:31 PM I know Obsolete Chevy Parts has outer wheel houses for a 68 El Camino not sure what else they have. http://www.obschevy.com
72ElCaminoSS Jan 1st, 05, 2:26 PM I've found most of the stuff out there. Sometimes there will be fabrication required as some of the parts are not exact repros. But, I think you can find almost everything.
Just do A LOT of research. Sometimes you can even find stuff on eBay.
