Any idea how rare the tach/clock/guage cluster was on the 69 SS?

Right off, I found something interesting. Going by the '69 RPO totals report (which I find to be the most accurate of all the Chevrolet "literature" by far), the U14 "Instrument Panel Gauges" option was availvable on the following models (with or without the Z25 SS-396 package):

300 Deluxe 2-door sedan V8
300 Deluxe 2-door coupe V8
Malibu 2-door coupe V8
Malibu 2-door convertible V8

The most interesting part (according to this report), is that the '69 gauge package was NOT available in the El Camino - not even the SS-396 El Camino. Strange, but apparently true.

But to answer your question, a total of 24,852 2-door V8 Chevelles came with the gauge package. That is about 8% of the total number of 2-door V8 Chevelles built in '69.

You could apply the 8% to the SS-396 total to guess how many '69 SS cars had gauges. But that would be somewhat inaccurate since SS cars would tend to have gauges at a higher rate than non-SS cars.

Not to hijack the thread, but Mr Carr, My Monaco Orange L78 came with the speed warning option. Could you tell me how many cars came this way in 69? or even how many monaco orange l78s there were in 69? Thanks.

Dan,

How about some info on how to get this chart. Anything well worth the bucks is worth my bucks.

I have never found any published records on the production totals for the different colors. I think the reason may be because the color was not an extra-cost option (unless it was a two-tone). The reports I have list the number of extra-cost options installed in the Chevelle line-up.

Luckily for you, Monaco Orange and Daytona Yellow only came on SS cars in '69 - so that is proof that yours is real (if the trim tag is real and has the "72" paint code).

The U15 "Speed Warning Indicator" was installed in 4,372 '69 Chevelles. It was available on ANY car in the entire Chevelle line-up (L6, V8, wagon, El Camino, 4-door, etc.).

So just under 1% of all '69 Chevelles had the speed warning.

PS: My '69 Buick SportWagon 400 has it too.

Dan,
Not trying to argue here, but the info package I got from Chevrolet shows the U14 gauge package as an available option on the elky model 13680 (Custom, V8) only for a whopping $96.85. So....no one ordered it? Or was this really not offered?? Again, not arguing....just trying to learn.

Thanks!

Dan, Monaco Orange and Daytona Yellow WERE extra cost options in '69. Per info in the GM Restoration pack, they were $42.15 extra. No RPO assigned though, so probably still no way to track actual numbers.

How many of the 69 SS Chevelles got the NC8 Chambered exhaust, RPO NC8? Read somewhere that it was a rare option, just curious.

Thanks! That may be correct. From my experience, the RPO totals report is the most accurate picture of what was made and what wasn't. It says no gauges were sold in '69 El Caminos. The report could be in error, but so could the "info packet".

Until a '69 El Camino build sheet shows up that shows the U14 option, I'm going to assume (although not convincingly) that gauges didn't come in '69 El Caminos.

FYI - The '68 and '70 reports indicate that El Caminos with gauges were sold in those years.

Is there anything different about the dash in '69 Chevelles vs. El Caminos ? That might be a reason why gauges wouldn't come in El Caminos - but I can't think of any differences (never owned a '69 myself).

Thanks for that info. I believe that it is true that no RPO code existed for those two colors - so they wouldn't show up on the option totals report.

I wonder if anyone has a real window sticker for a yellow or orange '69 SS ?

Chris NC8 was sold on 4,143 '69 Chevelles. It was available only on V8 2-door cars, and probably only on the SS-396 (and maybe COPO 427).

So it is fairly rare.

Hi Dan,
Sorry do not mean to hijack but could you tell me how many 71 Malibu 400 convertibles were made? I will not get into the options but it is a very early Los car 00026. Thanks for any info

Dan,
how many posters can you ship in one tube ?
Do you have a special rate or discount for a multiple order ?

You may not know the answer for these next 2, but I'll ask anyway.
Is U14 the code for all 3 redlines ?
How did the assembler know which tach to install ? (5000, 5500, 6000).
Any breakdown on number of tachs produced based on redline ?

Thanks, Nate

Sorry but the tach/gauge package did come in at least one 69 SS El Camino. I drove it off the showroom floor in May 1969 and helped put over 80K miles on that car until sold in 1972. Call me a liar if you want but my memory isn't that bad, yet. The 69 El Camino I own now isn't an SS and its gauge package is completely different from the one that came in the 69 SS we bought new.
Please tell me what was so unique about this U14 package? I can't believe only one car was built with it.
