What can I use to wipe down the trunk before I spray it with spatter paint? do I need a primer? TIA

I would highly reccomend a black primer or coat of Semi-flat black paint prior to the spatter paint. It will make a much nicer job.

Bob,don't forget to get the special clear made for spatter paint..it waterproofs the spatter too.

Just did my trunk this past weekend. I used a surface wash (mild wax/grease remover) prior to laying down the spatter paint. I agree that you should make sure that you use some type of black primer/paint as a base coat...you'll get much better coverage. I had a few spots where I used red oxide primer, and you could still see the primer. The rest of the trunk was pre-painted black and it covered great. It ended up taking me about 5 cans of spatter paint.

Bob,laquer thinner, rubbing alcohol or prepsolve works fine.
