: Color Combo
CranberryRed Apr 25th, 04, 12:12 AM Anyone know if there was a color combo, fathom blue top, classic white center and astro blue bottom for 70 wagons? I am told this was the color combo of my wagon, although the top is very faded it looks more astro to me (white from under is showing through, plus it had been waxed while chalky paint). Unfortunately, there is no jambs to look at for the roof color. I pulled up the window trim and it still looks astro blue to me. The trim tag says PNT 10 10, looking through the Chevelle El Camino ID Book by NCOA is does not reference a 10 10, unless I am missing it? The original bill of sale says "3 Tone". Maybe they meant three different colors??? or two in three differnt layers??? Interior is 764.
Anyone help out?

Thanks
I highly doubt that paint is stock. I have however seen 2 examples of a strange 2-tones on '72 El Caminos, kind of a precursor to the mid-'73 El Camino Conquista 2-tone (you know what I'm talking about?)
There was a '70 Chevelle 300 Deluxe (I'm in Canada) that I remember seeing regularly from new until the late 70s (I saw it once more in '83). It was Forest Green with a Frost Green 2-tone on the roof. It had small standard hubcaps like yours, and the wheels were painted in the secondary colour (Frost Green). I have heard it refered to as an A-B-C paint scheme. You know about 2-letter paint codes for lower/upper paint? Well this supposedly had a 3rd code. Something that you'd see on a car ordered for fleet or commercial use.
Gene, that is one very unusual wagon. I find it very interesting. Cool!
jtjohnston Apr 25th, 04, 1:57 AM To go off topic, I love to see these old motors. Straight-six, 140 hp. Mine has 50,700 original miles on it. Does it have the 2-speed powerglide?
You know what, I just thought of something. I do remember seeing exclusive 2-tones on Chevy wagons in the early seventies, but they were full-size cars.
In '73 there was a secondary colour on the roof and also down low below the lower crown line all the way to the rocker. I only ever saw 1 example of the '73 style, a Dark Brown with Chamois secondary colour. That was in April of '74 (good God I need to get a life!).
In 1974 the 2-tone style was changed in the areas it was applied. The secondary colour was up on the very top of the roof (not down into the drip rail area) plus on the side in almost exactly the same area as where the woodgrain would go on a Caprice Classic Estate. I saw 2 different '74 Chevy wagons with that 2-tone, I of which was a 3-seat Bel Air 2-blocks from my house so I saw it nearly every day. It was Sandstone with Bronze Metallic secondary colour.
I realize that these are different car lines, but it does show that Chevy did have special 2-tones on at least some wagons around that time period in the early 70s. Although I am somewhat skeptical about the 3-tone on your wagon, I am certainly open to the possibility of it. Wait, your original bill of sale says that it had 3-tone? That adds much to the credibility of your claim. I wonder if it was applied at the dealer or factory?
CranberryRed Apr 25th, 04, 4:26 AM Hey Cam . . .Interesting on the forest green and frost green colors, that is unique. It is intersting to see the odd color combinations that GM came up with back then. I recall seeing a shadow grey malibu with a red interior, really stood out.
I am still stumped by the 10-10 on my wagons tag. As for the bill of sale, it says 3 tone. I took a photo of it, but can't seem to get it uploaded.
I would have hoped if it was a special order the new owner would have added more options than an 8-track AM radio??? As for the motor jtjohnson, it is the original 6 with a three on the tree at 89,000 miles. No options, other than the radio, no power steering or brakes. Makes it bit of a challenge to drive. The dealer was Downing Chevrolet in Deer Lodge, Montana.
It was taken care of very well, I gather it was kid free as the interior is in really good shape. The front seat bottom was torn, but the rear seat is perfect.
FO_FDYFO Apr 25th, 04, 10:42 PM i dont know but i had a set of stainless molding that i took off of a gm a-body wagon (not chevelle) that made the seperation in those color lines. it went from the bottom of the drip rail across to the side window molding and the another piece that went on the rear corner conecting the back bottom corner of the rear window trim to the tailgate which had a piece of stainless along the top edge of the tailgate. i have pictures of it sitting on my wagon but i have since sold it. i have never seen it befor and it was absolutly original. it might have been a buick special... ???
johnyac Apr 26th, 04, 12:47 AM Hey All,
My 65 2 dr was, if I have read the tag right, two toned. Aqua on top and white on the bottom, with the aqua interior. Is this an odd deal or were most of the wagons done up in two tones?

65 two door 300.
Hey Johnyac, I have seen only 3 Chevies with that colour combo in the last 29 years. 1 was a '66 Bel Air 2-door post in Cincinatti Ohio, one was a '66 Impala Sport Sedan in Ellicottville NY, and 1 was a '65 Impala Sport Sedan in Ocean City, Washington.
I have seen only a few 2-tone wagons, but I have never seen a 2-door wagon with two-tone.
I found a downloaded picture courtesy of an old Chevelle Trivia & Tom Wilson posting that lent itself to doctoring. What I did was turn the picture into exactly the 2-tone 1970 Chevelle (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/Cam/70Chevelle300DeluxeSportCoupe.jpg) that I mentioned earlier in this thread. As I said, this car is exactly what I recall seeing numerous times from about 1971 until 1983. It was a Canadian 300-deluxe series. The 2-tone carried the secondary colour on both the roof and wheels.
J_Fairchild Nov 18th, 04, 10:51 PM CranberryRed,
That is a pretty sharp wagon. It's definetly different!
My 70 wagon tag is 10-10 also.As far as I know that is the code for Classic White. Which my wagon was.But now it's painted Cranberry Red......Jim :D
