: Are '66 wagons "RARE?"
JimN Nov 14th, 02, 10:22 PM I saw this ebay post: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1872665622
It says "This is NOT a 64 or 65. They are plentiful." Are they? I have owned my 65 for 12 years and have only seen 4 others in all that time. They are around on the internet from time to time, but does anyone know the production numbers? Were there less 66 wagons made? And the rhetorical question, how many of each year are left?

dabuickman Nov 15th, 02, 7:07 PM Jim, if he had a 65 chevelle he would say that 66's are easy to find and "his" 65 is really rare. when is the last time you seen any old car driving around anymore? going to work everyday i pass a 73 malibu in a parking lot, i say "i havent seen one of them around for some time". they used to be everywhere...kinda sad Rob
hoffbug Nov 15th, 02, 9:17 PM Beg,borrow, or steal the Nov 15, issue of National Dragster.
On page 38 there is a small article on Clay Petersons 66 malibu wagon O/SA stocker.
The 3470 LB wagon runs 6.14 gears, a 2.08 first geared powerglide, and the 220 horse version of the 283.
It shifts at 6200 and crosses the line at 7800 http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif
All this using valvetrain parts, connecting rods, and pistons the same size and weight as the originals.
elcamino Nov 16th, 02, 1:18 PM According to the "Chevrolet Buyers Guide" by John Gunnell there were 31,900 Chevelle 4 dr station wagons in 1966, 8,900 6 cyl and 23,000 V8.
1964 ~ 41,374 4 dr, 2,710 2dr
1965 ~ 25,595 4 dr, 1,668 2 dr
Granted, a sta wgn is not a very popular car and I am sure very few of them are still around today. The would be stiped for parts to rebuild the more popular El Camino's etc.

skaggs396 Nov 17th, 02, 4:50 PM I used to work with a guy that had a 66 malibu wagon left out in the middle of a cow pasture. As it so happend, he knew that I had a 66 SS and said I could have parts off of it free since he was not ever going to do anything with it. (I think the car was his grandmothers before she passed). My father and I trudged through mud and about 2 foot tall grass to get to it. We scored a complete a/c system and other stuff. In terms of worth, I think the parts that can cross over to other 66 Chevelle models are worth more than the car itself.
Whittaker Nov 18th, 02, 1:24 AM I have a 66 4 door wagon that I would love to get done. But my 2 door is the main ride for now. If i start having kids the wagon will get some serious attention.
I say they are rare. How many did you see at Chevelle-abration. Not many. I think they are way better than a regular 4 door. They are the early sport utes.
Count how many even cross e-bay especially 66 and 67 wagons.

leeds Nov 18th, 02, 1:35 AM I drove one through a 7-11 window (brakes went away) in north kansas city so I hope they are not rare. we had just driven it back from the mississippi river jam in davenport (seems like journey played)- anyway remember drivin it back, had to wire the taillights with a lamp cord
Wes V Nov 18th, 02, 11:59 AM A 66 wagon isn't "rare" depending on how you want to define it.
There were a ton of them made and if quantity originally built is the guideline, it's not rare.
If you want to talk about how many are still on the road and in reasonable condition, then maybe you could justify the term.
It's kind of like stating that a car is a "collectors" car. There are individuals out there that collect Vega's. Does that make them collectors cars??

1966_L78 Nov 18th, 02, 4:58 PM I agree with Wes...
The 66 Chevelle wagon is not a rare car... I think there were actually more wagon s than El Caminos in 66...
Its just that years ago, who would ever save a wagon, or a 4-door... So they mostly ended up getting junked...
Its kind of a bummer that they are becoming cool... Now lots of folks are trying to get big bucks for them...
I saw one this summer that was real nice (straight, new paint, clean interior), but no fancy options.
The owner was asking $7K... I could have found a 2-door Malibu for that price in the same condition...
Funny thing, 2 months later I saw the same car at a huge car show (Hot August Nights in Reno), and the owner was asking $9500 for the car...
what an idiot http://www.chevelles.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

Whittaker Nov 18th, 02, 7:54 PM There are lots of Malibu's and SS's that have survived, yes many wagons were made but how many exist today. If a dodo bird was around it would be rare but at one time there were tons of them. Does this no longer make it rare?

Whittaker Nov 18th, 02, 7:55 PM I'm not saying they are highly desireable or valuable for that matter just few and far between. Try getting parts for one.

Bomber '67 Nov 18th, 02, 11:40 PM Rare? Desireable? Who cares! Buy and enjoy whatever you like, because ALL old cars are RARE.
Actually, I get the biggest kick out of the guys who are reliving the muscle car era with the cars that were the most embarassing to show up at a cruise spot.
I'm sorry if it upsets the long roof and four door lovers - but usually if you showed up at a hot car cruising spot with one of the aforementioned cars you were written off as a surfer (bum), or it was just all too plain obvious that you were borrowing the "family" car - very uncool.
What's next? Will enthusiasts(?) glom onto straight six's with three on the tree? Maybe bench seats will be the latest - yeah, I can see it now "man, I gotta get rid of these bucket seats".
Everybody is different, but for me the only four door wagons that catch my eye are the pillarless hardtop style from the mid/late 50's to the early 60's.

yellowcar72 Nov 19th, 02, 5:28 AM My wife actually likes my 70 wagon.
BobH Nov 20th, 02, 5:02 PM Well i guess its official i'm a nerd . I took out the buckets of my 64 2 door wagon and put the bench seat back in plus i've owned it for 27 years and drove it to the cruise spots back in the 70s. (albeit had a decent 396, 4 spd and 4.56s back then). Damn!
upstate dave Nov 20th, 02, 10:16 PM I met a fellow this past summer with a 4 speed 327, 300 horse 2 door 65 Malibu wagon. He is the orginal owner. He showed me pictures of him and his car at the local drag strip when it was new. The car has over 500,000 miles on it. It has Nomad badges on it and he states that they were on it when he bought the car. The doors are cut sorta like a 57 nomad doors with the back side windows at a angle to match the door, not straight up and down. I have one picture of the car, anyone interested I can e mail a copy or maybe someone tell how to post the picture on TC.
Bomber '67 Nov 20th, 02, 11:23 PM The '64 and '65 TWO door wagons are cool because they are almost like sedan deliveries (I remember people painting over the two door wagon quarter windows to make them look like sedan deliveries). Another way of looking at the two door wagons is that they are like an ElCamino with a factory shell!
Sadly, the two door Chevelle wagons never caught on when new, and they were unceremoniously dumped after '65.
But the four door wagons...beyond donating parts to other Chevelles and ElCaminos...well, like I said: buy what you like and enjoy driving it.
