Tempted to put some ghost flames on my brand new black paint job. Kinda scary to screw up a perfectly good paint job but then again I can always sand it off!

Are you painting with a Base/clear coat system? For the best results you need to use BC/CC.
Do you want to put the ghost flames on a straight (no mettalic or pearl) black paint?

If the answer is yes to both, here's the steps I would take.

Lay down the black base coat.

Also, spray a test panel with the BC.

Tape out flames.

Tape a few sections of your test panel.

Mix a 1/2 pint of the black base coat with reducer (total)

Now, here's the critical part. We haven't discussed what color or additive your going to add to shade your flames with. The amount you add will vary with the color and how much 'ghost' the flames will have.
Let's say you want add some silver for the ghost effect.
Your paint mixing service will supply you with some straight silver mettalic in a small
quantity.
You're just going to have to add 2-3 cc's at a time to the pint of mixed black.
Paint one of your test sections with your new mixture.
Let it flash and look at it in the sun.
Is it enough? The clear coat will enhance the difference. If it dosn't show up enough, add 2-3 CC's more at a time until the desired effect is before you.
Every color is different as well as pearls and mettalics.
If I were doing ghost flames on a black surface, I would only spray the outer edges of the tips of the flames.
After you have sprayed your real flames, Clear coat as usual with two coats.
After at least 24 hours, wet sand with 1,000 grit to smooth the surface and remove all traces of the flames edges.
After that, apply one or more coats of clear.
Wet sand and buff.

No unfortunately I have a black single stage enamel paint on it. So I'm thinking that I would have to spray a clearcoat with pearl/metallic in it and the straight clearcoat over that. Or would I put pearl/metallic in some more black paint and then just clear over that? Is it possible to do this with an enamel finish?
