You mentioned sealing the hood vents to smooth out the hood. What would be the best way to do this ? Tack weld a backing underneath and fill with plastic filler ?
Thanks for the suggestion

texas,
I think the BEST method to smooth that section out is remove it and weld in a new piece.

Welding a piece from the bottom and then filling the gaps with filler to ME just doesnt settle right. I think youd have some adhesion problems with the filler as you wont be able to get a bond between the vents.

The way Id do it if it was mine, is cut out the entire vent area. Then make a patch for your hole out off a 70-72 hood. Simply cus the metal gauge will be the same and if you cut it right ahead of the vent on the donor hood the metal will be shaped pretty darn close. That way you dont have custom make your your panel and tweak the hell out her to fit right.

Now depending on your welding skills you could butt weld it in place(my method of choice) or go with a lap weld. If I did a lap weld I would flange the metal on the hood that way when you set the panel in place it sits flush with the surrounding metal.

Or if you dont feel like welding it in glue the SOB in place. With the right vise grips you wouldnt need screws to hold it in place, meaning no holes to fill later. I recommend Fusor products as I think they have the best or one of best products on the market.

I think either method would work just fine, welding in place using a butt or lap and even adhesion bonding.

But Id stay away from just slapping the mud to her graemlins/beers.gif ...Eric

If you glued it, wouldn't that save alot of heat warpage issues. In a flat area like a hood that could be a real bugger to try to make flat again! If you could flange it and glue it, I think you could save alot of time and effort. Just my point of view.

If I decide to do this, I think I would go with the Fusor, flanger and bond the two pieces together.
Thanks guys graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I did this on my 69 hood (kind of), I just filled them with ALL-Metal from the bottom and sanded them smoothe.
In fact I put part of the scoop over three of them and left others open.
I will try to post pictures?

I dont see the Filer coming loose given the loovers are round and I used mutible layers and reall packed it tight.

Do not see why you would smooth the vents. Unless you are removing the heat/air completely and do not want vent airflow in the summer then I guess it is OK. I learned the hard way a few times that the GM engineers knew what they were doing and those vents are there for a reason. I think your scoop placement and the vents look great!

Honestly I dont know why the vents on the hood are even there? (The SS cars dont have them)
They dont go into the engine bay, they go into the cowling for fresh air inside the car.
If you look there are seals on the cowl and hood that seals the area from the motor.
The scoop will get it's air from the windshield, mabe thats what they are talking about the 4"?
Mabe thats where you get the most air off the windsield?

GM engineers knew what they were doing and those vents are there for a reason[/QB]I think a clan of half retard monkeys could design cars and trucks better then those idiots that work there now graemlins/sad.gif graemlins/sad.gif

I still say loose the vents

Thanks for all the input guys. Considering I have so much other work and money to put into this car and it will be in (epoxy) primer for quite a while, I am just going to get some 2 part epoxy for the edge of the scoop, feather scoop to hood with filler, prime and let it go at that for a year. If things begin to crack or separate, I will repair at that time....... graemlins/waving.gif
