: 1972 Tailgate
72ElCaminoSS May 8th, 04, 12:48 AM Anyone else pick up a "1969-72" tailgate for a 71-72?
Didn't realize till I started installing it that it had the hole cut for the outside emblem (handle?) for a 69-70. After looking on the internet, most do come that way.
I guess I am going to have to weld a piece of my old tailgate in place.
Also, what can I use to remove those huge phillips head screws on the hinges? I got an impact driven driver (you hit it with a hammer and it turns). I actually busted my hammer trying to budge them. Guess I need a bigger hammer!
TonawandaKid May 8th, 04, 10:01 AM Get Ya a 3lb.phord tool, after you spray the inside with PB blaster,it worked for me.

TimC May 8th, 04, 11:02 AM You broke your hammer? Let 'em sit with PB Blaster on them for a day or so and try again with the impact driver.
ac72rat May 8th, 04, 3:14 PM Say do you get that PB blaster at local auto stores???
72ElCaminoSS May 8th, 04, 9:12 PM What is PB Blaster? Sounds like a new candy bar (with a blast of peanut butter)
Kinda like Liquid Wrench.....only better. Check your local parts store.
72ElCaminoSS May 9th, 04, 5:07 PM Cool, will do, thanks!
Anyone here think I should put a 69-70 latch on my tailgate? My wife's very against the idea since she wants my car 100% stock.
70ElkySS May 10th, 04, 1:02 PM Not sure what you're asking...I think all the 69-72's had inside tailgate handles (my '70 definitely does). The gates shown in my catalogs have a small cutout and 2 screw holes for mounting the emblem, but that's not for a handle - is that what you're seeing?
72ElCaminoSS May 10th, 04, 6:55 PM Okay, I thought the emblem doubled as a handle somehow, especially since there's a big square cutout between it and the latch mechanism.
I'm going to have to get it patched I guess.
72ElCaminoSS May 11th, 04, 12:08 PM I picked up a new 3 lb sledge and a can of PB Blast. I'll see how that works.

72ElCaminoSS May 16th, 04, 8:31 PM No luck with anything. I even broke my impact driver.
I guess I'm going to just drill them out.
68ElCamino May 16th, 04, 10:23 PM I heated mine from inside the tailgate and they came out with a screw driver. Avoid heating the mounting plate inside the tailgate as much as possible.
