: Need Opinions on Exhaust for 68 El Camino
Bo6869ChevelleMan Apr 22nd, 04, 12:01 AM What kind of exhaust system do you have on your El Camino ? What type of mufflers are you running ? (brand name) . Are your tailpipes going up over the axle and exiting behind the rear wheel or over the axle and straight back to the rear bumper ? All I have so far is the headers, I was going to either run headers and a short pc. of 2 1/2 " dia. pipe to turbo thrush mufflers (from Summit)and then have two tailpipes made to go over the axle and straight back to the rear bumper. I was also considering headers then sidepipes (from Summit) they have them in 50,60 70 and 80 inches in length. I think I would need either 70" or 80" in length. Does anyone have headers and sidepipes on their El Caminos ? How do they sound ? They are not real loud are they ? Do they have a deep throaty sound ? Does anyone have any pics. to post up of sidepipes on an El Camino ? Thanks,Mark -------------------------1968 Chevelle Malibu (Weekend Cruiser)-----------------1968 El Camino (Daily Driver)
cjlandry Apr 22nd, 04, 2:27 AM I have custom made 2.5" pipes from headers to mufflers. The mufflers are Summit Turbo. From there it's flowmaster tailpipes, cut and welded by me to exit out the side behind the rear wheels.
Sounds great, looks good.

flywheel Apr 22nd, 04, 10:36 AM I just put a Flowmaster kit #17120 on my Elky.It was $295 from Keystone here in KC.Easy to install and sounds GREAT with the 461BB  Remember, you'll get completly different sounds from exhuasts between SB's and BB's.Learned that the hard way from me 66sb and my 72bb.

Clint44 Apr 22nd, 04, 12:31 PM On my former 68 El Camino w/468 BB,it had 3" exhaust coming off the headers back to a pair of Flowmaster two-chambers. At first, the exhaust exited through turndowns in front of the rear axle. However, this makes the bed into a giant bass speaker, causing terrible resonance in the cab. After tiring of this,I installed a pair of 2.5" full tailpipes that exited under the rear bumper. This cured almost all of the bad resonance and even improved bottom end torque.
On my 69 El Camino,I've considered the idea of having Texas Quality Exhaust in Houston,Tx www.corvette-exhausts.com (http://www.corvette-exhausts.com) fabricate me a pair of 4" diameter sidepipes out of polished stainless. Since the new 427" will be using Sanderson intermediate headers that feature the collectors ending at the oil pan,the connecting tubing would have a nice, gentle bend.
Grant Apr 22nd, 04, 6:58 PM Hooker Competition "shorty" headers off the stock 396 heading down the 2 1/2" pipes to a Flowmaster 50 series muffler and up over the rear axle and out the side behind the rear tires. It sounds great and looks even better! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
cjlandry Apr 22nd, 04, 8:08 PM Another thing I love about the side-exit exhaust is the rumble I get echoed off the concrete guard-rails. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
RAMBO Apr 22nd, 04, 8:35 PM I run Edelbrock RPM Mufflers.. 409 Stainless w/ straight through cores. Sound is a little different than the over used flowmaster sound- I like it.
A couple notes to keep in mind...
The larger the muffler case- the quieter it will be. The shorter the case- the louder it will be.
Large case stock style mufflers may sound good on a big block, but not so good on a stockish small block (I learned this the hard way)
Chad is right on about the side exit exhaust sound... My 69 had that and i loved it!!
cjlandry Apr 22nd, 04, 9:43 PM One other note on the side-exits that I love. It differentiates between the right and left banks of the engine, so it accentuates the lope of the cam.
Of course, if you have an "H" or "X" pipe, this no longer applies.
phocksphyre Apr 23rd, 04, 7:33 PM Pypes makes a very nice system, uses Flowmaster mufflers and come with X pipe. Cheeper than FM system too. Nice folks!

pop_tart_68 Apr 24th, 04, 10:08 PM I've got dynomax jetcoated headers into 2.5" pipes. I have an h-pipe to balance the pressure even though it goes through 2-chamber flowmasters and turndowns before the rear axle.
The reason I'm not so sure about the h-pipe is that I'm not sure I really need to balance the pressures when the whole sytem isn't very long. But its there nontheless.
I've been really really happy with this system. It resonates well and has a nice note while in motion. The two chambers let people know when you put your foot down too. I don't have a stereo and probably won't for a long time because I love the sound so much.
I even talked a buddy with a 70 chevelle to take a saws-all to his and dump before the axle as well.
Crazyhorse Apr 25th, 04, 1:41 AM 71 elky, 402 BB FlowTech Headers, 2 1/2 Exhaust pipe to Flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers, 2 1/2 tail pipes custom bent up into the rear panel area and stainless steel 3 inch rolled baffeled tips. gives a full 3 inch look behind the car..
Sounds great.. untill you floor it then it wakes up...
402 bored 40 over, .125 domed pistons, 550 lift 295 dur, Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake, Edelbrock Performer EPS 800 Carb, and a TH400 that will give you a neckache. :D graemlins/thumbsup.gif
