I found a 71 or 72 Sprint MORE PICS ADDED!!

http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/Purs/small.jpg

I think it had a 400 emblem on the front and a 12 bolt under it. It had a 7k tach dash and buckets that need to be redone. Someone give me a ballpark figure on what this thing is worth.... it has some rust behind the lower rear wheelwell and the engine is gone.

Its worth the same as an elky in the same condition, just the cool factor is higher because its a sprint.

In that shape with no engine/tranny- I wouldn't pay more than $500 for it. JMO.

Looks like a 72 from the front, but I would look at the cowl tag and VIN just to be sure. The grille and front parking lamps are interchangeable between the 71 and 72. If it is a 72, you should be able to tell exactly what the original engine was from the VIN by checking this site's Sprint page (http://www.chevelles.com/sprint/index.html). I've never seen a 400 emblem on the grille, only the 350 and 454.

Hard to set a price without seeing the whole car, but if the interior was solid, good glass, minimal rust, etc., I'd probably give around $1000 for it.

Here is a pic of the grill emblem and interior. Where is the VIN located?

You should be able to see the VIN tag at the bottom inside of the windshield on the driver's side. The cowl tag will be almost directly beneath it under the hood. Looks like you've got the makings of a nice project car there.

A U code 402 Sprint would have the 400 emblem shown in the pic. Helped with a resto on one a few years back.

Thanks for the responses. Boy do I feel stupid, I was looking in the wrong place under the hood for the vin. graemlins/clonk.gif I guess I've had too many '72 trucks with the vin on the door pillar....I'll check the vin tomorrow.

It's a 1972 El Camino Custom "400"

You need to GRAB THAT TRUCK! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

It's an SS without the emblems.

It is a 1972 GMC sprint with a 402 engine originally. Those had the 400 emblem on the grille. I have one as well. I would be interested if you are not.

A Texas big block sprint I'd pay as high as $2000.

Anybody thats interested email me and I'll forward you the info. The Sprint is a U code automatic car. According to the reference page it is like one of 24 built..... it does have some rust on the lower rear quarter, no engine or tranny, and the passenger door is toast. On the brighter side, it has front disc brakes, 3 hole tach gauge cluster, 4 spoke steering wheel, bucket seats, AC and 12 bolt! it codes as a custom but don't know how to tell if it's an SP or not...? He wants $2500 and didn't seem real negotiable.

Cool find !

To be an SP, it would have to have a domed "SS" hood, the 5-spoke "mag" style SS wheels (with "GMC" center caps), and a driver's remote mirror. I don't see any of those items on it so I don't think it is an SP. To be an SP it would also have to have front disk brakes.

But I do see a lot of valuable parts. The "400" grille emblem is very rare (it only came on the '71-'72 402 Sprints). The steering wheel with the "Sprint" horn button is the rare optional Sprint sport wheel. And, of course, the dash with tach & gauges. It has the "Fasten Seat Belts" warning light in the dash, so it is a '72 dash (probably original).

The sheet metal looks pretty good.

PS: Note how the grille is painted, with silver highlights on the horizontal slats. That is how the GMC Sprint (non-SP) grilles came. Also note that the "GMC" grille emblem is missing. The last one of those I saw on eBay sold for over $400 !

great info dcarr! I read about SP's and the domed hood but not the other stuff. I'm new to elco's and sprints. graemlins/beers.gif

I remember the first GMC Sprint I ever saw; a '72 base - level model with a 307 in my home town of Ancaster, Ontario, Canada. It disappeared in '76 when a new El Camino replaced it, then the '76 moved away in '77. I still have the ad for the 1st GMC Sprint I ever heard of from a January '72 Outdoor Life. Dan Carr has a copy of it, but I have since scanned a large version of it at 5.51 Mb. Dan, do you want it? I don't have pkzip.

Hi Cam,

I might take you up on your offer to send a large scan.

But now that I know exactly what magazine issue it came from, I'm going to look for my own copy first.

Do you have a CD writer on your computer ? If I decide I need the bigger scan I could send you a blank CD for you to put the image on.
