: Tire/wheel combos
Clint44 Apr 12th, 04, 4:59 PM It seems our EC forum has kinda stagnated since its inception so I thought I might attempt to get some action going on. It seems the vast majority of Chevelle/El Camino owners are running 15" tires with either Rally or Cragar SS wheels the dominant choice. Does that describe your car?
Tell us what you are running now or have planned.
My 69 Elky is a former prostreet car that I replaced all the drivetrain from the engine back.
Being tubbed and back-halved,it now has PS Engineering 17x9 & 17x13 Kidney Bean wheels with true knockoff five-pin hubs. Backspacing on the 17x9's is 5" and on the 17x13's is 7.25". Tires are 275/40/17 & 335/35/17 Kumhos,at the moment, but a pair of Pirelli 360/35/17's will be going on the rear later.
RAMBO Apr 12th, 04, 5:18 PM I'll bite on this one...
I've got 15x8 Centerline Telestars on my elky... Wanted em when they first came out in 1996, but coulnd't afford them, bought them in 1999 for my 69 elky, and swapped them onto my 70 elky when i got it....
Been 5 years now... I still like em, but I'm starting to get tired of looking at em.
Thinking real hard about a set of 16" Torque Thrust "D"s (i heard they are making em in 16" now? Don't know if thats true or not)
Posibbly a set of 17" Budniks maybe... I'm real picky about what I like in the bigger rims sizes.
I want something different, but still ver musclecarish looking...
Cecil Apr 12th, 04, 5:50 PM Count me in. I have 15" on mine, American Racing Baja wheels. Running P25560R15 all the way around, tight up front and I have to slow when turing and dipping, but not sobad it makes me want to change them.
Pic in sig...

72Sprint Apr 13th, 04, 1:42 PM Still deciding what to get, but I'm planning on 17x8 front and 17x9.5 rear to fit the Wilwood brake package I want. Tire sizes will depend on the brand that I end up selecting.
Grant Apr 13th, 04, 5:25 PM I've got the original factory SS rims wrapped up in BFG's. Bought a set of 17" American Billet rims and BFG's. Put them on but didn't like the look as much so I decided to stay with the stock rims. Now I have a set of custom rims to sell. I just like the stock SS rims look too much I guess. smile.gif
Wheel Vintique Ralleys here. 275/60/15 on the rear. 8" wheel with 5" bs. 235/60/15 on the front. 7" wheel with 4" bs. Repro trim rings with real deal centers from a 74 vette. Going for the COPO Camino look. ;)

Used to run a set of 14" vintage Torq Thrust with 225/70/14's. That's when I was thinking of the Yenko Elky look. ;) ;)

Crazyhorse Apr 16th, 04, 3:11 PM I chose to stay original, 15x7 on front
15x8 on rear front tires 235/60/15, 295/50/15 on rear... :D
I serched for weeks and found a 71 454 SS parts camino (no title) and the guy had the set of rallys also.
I bought the parts car and the rallys for 450, used all the trim molding, emblems, SS Dash, Steering column, seat ( I re upholsetered ) and then sold the rest of the car for 700.00 to a person who had wrecked his 71 and needed the quarter panels and doors.
Ebay's Great! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

72ElCaminoSS May 8th, 04, 12:53 AM I went with the stock SS 5 spoke wheels (15") and BFG TA's (235/60/15).
I just love that combo, common as it is.

David Bates May 11th, 04, 1:06 PM Fikse Wheels: Front 17x8, 4.5" B.S., Nitto 555 P245-45ZR17's and Rear 17x9.5, 5.5" B.S., Nitto 555 P285-40ZR17's.
Clint44 May 11th, 04, 4:32 PM Damn,your Elky looks good,Dave.
70ssgeg May 12th, 04, 11:45 AM 15x7's with P235's all the way around for that square look since it's a daily driver. Otherwise I'd like to go P275 rear P245 front.Ralleys on now,but I'm partial to the SS wheel too.
David Bates May 13th, 04, 8:21 AM Clint, Thanks for the kind words but I wish it looked as good as yours! Up close it's starting to look a little rough. Theres a lot of chips from gravel/stones so it is definitely due for paint.
Right now it is up on jackstands while I change to Wilwood 12.90" front discs with their 6-piston calipers and 12.2" rears with 4-piston calipers (internal parking brake like later GM). Everything fit well with the exception of the rear rotors (separate rotor/hat similar to your Baer's). Wilwood obviously had either Camaro's or 68-later Chevelles in mind when they made this kit so I am having the hats machined to offset the rotor 0.250" towards the outside so the calipers would not hit the shocks/brackets. I called Mike at Wilwood and although he was very helpful, he indicated the kits are not sold by vehicle application but rather by rear axle type and the amount of "offset", the distance from the outer surface of the housing flange to the outer surface of the axle flange (2.750" in my case). I'm taking plenty of pictures and forwarding them to both Wilwood and the place I bought the kit from so they'll be better able to understand the issue with the early Chevelle 12-bolts and be better able to serve their customers in the future. I really wanted to stay away from the PBR floating calipers that Baer uses in their "affordable" kits so I went with Wilwood.

KAA May 13th, 04, 10:21 AM Dave,
I had the same problem last summer when I put the Wilwood 4 piston kit on my 12-bolt. The place I bought the kit from, hotrodsusa.com, sent me the correct rotor hats and hardware to get the correct offset. I just swapped out the parts and returned them.
David Bates May 13th, 04, 8:17 PM KAA,
I bought mine from the same place but I guess the 65-67 rears present a couple of issues that the leaf spring rears and the later 68-72 A-body 12-bolts don't. I spent a fair amount of time on the phone with Dean at Hot Rods USA and Mike at Wilwood and they were unable to answer directly. When I get the hats back from the machine shop tomorrow, I'll post some pictures of the assembled set-up before I remove my existing 12-bolt and install the new one in my Elky.

Clint44 May 19th, 04, 12:13 AM Keith, could you post your wheel sizes and backspacing figures so we can have them listed on this thread?
Chuck Nixon May 20th, 04, 10:13 AM Just bought my 67 Elky and it came with 15x7 chrome slotted rims on the back with 15/235 BFG TA's and 15x6 chrome slotted rims on the front with 15/215 BFG TS's. I am collecting the original rims from the seller so I can put them on when I want to show the car for points etc. I like the look of all chrome, see photo in my signature block. :D

Check this out. You can select make model and year then change the different styles/size of the wheels. You can also change the ride height of the car.

Clint44 May 30th, 04, 10:52 PM Keith,those backspacing numbers are before you added the 1" spacers,,right?
That's correct. I had to use 1" wheel adapters to get them to fit.
