Has anyone actually installed a Gaylord cover? The only pics on the site are of a 67 Elky with a ribbed top. I'd like to see where the holes are drilled for the hinges and lifts and locks, etc...and the fit and finish of the top.

Guys,

Might just be my wimpy Laptop screen, but I can't tell a whole lot about the El Camino covers - are any of them made where they fit 'inside' the bed of a 72 style? I really like the chrome (adds a lot of good contrast to a blue/black paintjob) and would like to avoid removing/covering it. Some that fit just inside the ridge/lip apex or that simply was flush with the bottom of the chrom on the inside (add an additional strip of sheet down the sides? Hoping this made sense to ya'll - have a good night

My Gaylord lid fits in the "groove" of the bed rails. And covers only half of the tailgate chrome.
I'll post some photos this week. Just be patient with me . Lots going on right now

I asked Gaylords if they made a smooth lid for my El Camino in gloss black. I just got their response: "I do not know who makes a flat lid for your truck. The only companies
that make flat lids are Gemtop and Fastback, you will be able to find
them in Truckin' magazine. Good luck."
The only lid they offered me was a textured lid with six ribs going down the top lengthwise.

I only wish I could find a set of stands that weren't pitted! I had these powder coated but the pitting showed through.

I struggled with the idea of drilling all those holes too. But. in the end, it's the look I wanted and so I went with it. The first elky I owned had the soft cover and rails, for me it's a nostalgia thing.

Texture is like on a vinyl top. Overlap seams would line up with ones made into the OEM vynil top http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/pmullaly/Elkypics003.jpg

I have one of the vary early style Gaylord bed overs on my 65 elky.... it's covers the bed rail and tail gate molding ( it sits on the outside lowere edge ) it's smooth .

If your an Aces Memeber. A picture of it's in Chevelle World Jan issue
where Chucks talking about pictures of El Caminos
it's a 3/4 front shot but you can see how it hides the bed moding..

it also follows the conture of the corner peices ,, I have seen the new gaylord lids and they round the rear cornes so Some of the trim shows..

1966 Elky
I just designed my own cover, I just was not satisfied with the ones on the market. I put 3/4"
alum.angle all the way around the inside of the bed, with pop rivits, about the 1/4 inch below the edge of the bed. I had the local upholstery
shop make a soft cover. They put velcrow and snaps all the way around angle that I had installed. NO SNAPS IN THE CHROME. It really looks nice, I have had many compilments. I will take pictures this weekend and if anybody wants them I will e-mail them to you.
Total cost $240.00 graemlins/waving.gif

This is the only picture I have on my computer right now. But here is my tonneau cover. It was made from a cover I picked up at a swap meet for $10. It was orginally for a long bed pickup, I just modified it to fit the bed. Still trying to figure out how to lift it up. Any questions just ask.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but hated to start a new one. I want a bed cover like this for my 69 but still have a few questions.
Phil or anyone else;is this the textured unit sold by Gaylord? If so,does anyone have a photo of one of their smooth bed covers for a 68-72 Elky? How much of the bed moulding do these lids cover? My car presently has a soft cover and I want to cover up the snap holes in my bed moulding. Any other manufacturer out there now make a smooth,flush-mount bed cover for a 68-72?
I just do not like my soft leather tonneau cover. It sags and flexes excessively & retains dirt like crazy. It was already installed when I bought the car or it never would have been on the car.

I have a Protect-o-Top on my 71. I have a vinyl top on mine, and the top is made to look like a vinyl top. It is also a lot cheaper than the Gaylord one. Come off easy if you want it off.

I have a Gaylords hardcover. I don't have it on mine right now, but I like it. The reason I don't have it on is the previous owner had some crappy homemade hinges on it. It does fit down in the groove of the bedrails. I am not too crazy about that but other than that it's a great cover in my opinion.... graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I'm having a little trouble in visualizing what you're talking about. Does the edge of the hardcover cover up any part of the bed moulding? My moulding has snaps every 6" or so for the tonneau cover.

Yes that cover on mine is a Gaylord. It is textured, but with a belt sander and some patiencs you could probably sand it smooth.
