View Full Version : 1970 El Camino Custom SS?
70ECam Mar 27th, 04, 7:49 PM Does anybody have a 1970 E.C. 136800 VIN that was ordered with an SS package. Saw somewhere online that it could be ordered that way but haven't confirmed it yet. I visited another site that was quick to jump on the new joins saying that they didn't have an SS because of this VIN. Yes that's my 1970 VIN prefix and I may have a matching # 396, if it is genuine. Any help would be greatly appreciated....
TonawandaKid Mar 28th, 04, 9:51 AM That should be the correct prefix for the 70' SS,in 70 you couldn't order a SS package unless you ordered the custom Elcamino first.136800
someone chime in if I'm wrong.

AZCamino Mar 28th, 04, 9:59 AM The Super Sport options Z25 and Z15 were both available on Custom El Caminos (13680). The Z25 option came with a 350HP 402 engine (L34) and the Z15 came with a 454. The Custom El Camino was also available with a 330HP 402 big block (LS3) without the SS option. If you have a 70 El Camino with an original 402 it may or may not be a Super Sport depending on which big block is in it. The LS3 is coded CKR (Manual) or CKN (turbo hydramatic) and the L34 is coded CTX (manual) or CTW (turbo).
I suspect a lot of El Caminos (and Chevelles)with LS3s have been cloned into SSs by their owners.
70ECam Mar 28th, 04, 1:04 PM I may have a matching # L-78, if not a fake stamp, so I'm researching as much as I can before I get my hopes up. The cowl tag has a 9c(of '69)build date ,the 3969854 block H-11-9, the 3964291 heads are F-18-9, and the 12 bolt has a F-16-9 date. Trying to get the axle code and tranny dates still. Very hard to read. Those dates would be pretty accurate if original wouldn't they? Somebody get my hopes up please....
AZCamino Mar 28th, 04, 1:47 PM Yes, the L-78 was an optional engine with the Z25 SS396. The block should be a 4-bolt, the H date is good. The F dates on the heads and rear seem a little too early, but, I guess, possible. Post a picture of the block stamp.
Sounds like an interesting El Camino. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Unfortunately, the previous owner also ditched the GMC grille emblem, which now is harder to find than hen's teeth.
70ECam Mar 28th, 04, 11:57 PM Soon as I can bum a digital camera I'll post some pic's of any #'s I can find. Does anyone else have a vin # behind the oil filter? Haven't found any picture's online as a reference for stamp size and this location, just diagrams. Motors out so everything's easy to see. It's almost a shame to to find a car this neglected that's possibly an L-78 SS...Just have to wait and see. Thanks for the info and I'll be asking many more questions soon.
70ECam Mar 29th, 04, 3:48 PM AZCamino, where is this three letter code found on the block?
AZCamino Mar 29th, 04, 5:21 PM The three letters are the last three characters of an eight character stamp that starts with T, followed by 4 characters for a date code, and then the 3 character suffix. Looks like TI207CTX. It is located on the front passenger side head surface (deck).
70ECam Mar 31st, 04, 1:02 AM Then it's safe to presume my block has been decked at least once, possible twice depending how many thousandths deep the stamp might be...Joy. The block's going to have to go in and get mic'd and mag'd to see what the "damage" is and what I've got left to play with... Thanks again for the input.
