Lets get this forum going. Give me your opinion's on air baggin my 67. Keep in mind I really don't want to go with the big wheels. I have 15's on it.

Nobody has any advise? Basically I was just trying to make conversation. Oh well, Back to performance forum :D .

Not so fast!!!

I just put a set of drag bags under Ol Paint last weekend!

So far I am pleased with the change from air shocks. I added the bags, KYB shocks, new rubber bushings, a 7/8 swaybar, new stock rear springs, and boxed the upper and lower control arms.

It has firmed up the ride quite a bit but it's not rough at all and it hooks up much better. The only thing I don't like is the rear sits about 2" higher now.

I was having a little bit of tire rub on the inner fenders but the sway bar seems to have taken all the sideways movement out of the rear and it tracks much better.

I put the fill valves for the air bags in place of the rear license plate bolts and they're easy to get to for pressure adjustments. The difference from the air shocks is increased air pressure doesn't raise the rear it only stiffens it up. I've only driven it about 100 miles with 30PSI in them but it is not excessively rough so far. I'm glad I used rubber bushings instead of poly though or it could be pretty harsh.

When you say "air baggin" do you mean the AirLift 1000 (http://www.airliftcompany.com/images/al1000kit.jpg) bladders like I suspect James used in the coil springs or full air ride suspension like the ShockWave 9000 (http://www.ridetech.com/productinfo/cat04images/shockw9000.jpg)?

I have the airlift bags in all 3 of my vehicles :D I usually only run about 15psi in them so as to only firm up he rear end not to raise it much.they work great.

I've got 2" drop rear coils from Classic Performance Parts (http://www.classicperform.com) and the AirLift 1000 bags on mine and I love it. I've got 10 psi in them but I'm probably going to drop it to 5 psi to soften it up a little. The combo of the drop springs and the bags makes it a little rough with 10 psi for normal driving.

Now she's a going. Actually, I should have been more specific. I currently have bags in the rear springs and like them. I was thinking of a complete air ride suspension front and rear for the "slam on demand" look. Thanks to all for playing.

Oh, I'm using these,

The instructions call them "drag bags"!

I'm running QA1 and Strange Engineering coilovers on my 69 El Camino for ride height adjustment. Briefly considered going with a full air bag system but just couldn't justify the high cost for a top of the line set-up. Besides, being able to drop the car on the ground has limited value to me. Different strokes,,,,

If looks are all thats important go with the "layin frame" bags. If you want it to actually handle find another way, I know the bag guys will say they can thier system to handle just as well as anything else, but if so you don't any race cars run them. I'll stick with coils and spindles thanks.

Hey Big James, try loosing the bolts on the control arms and jumping upp and down on the back end of your truck and see if it doesn't come back down. Be sure and retighten them at ride height. Worked for me. Edd

I'll give that a try!

Hey James, about the height thing...

I don't know about the drag bags specifically but the airlift 1000's have a MAX pressure of 30-35 lbs... I usually run a max of 20lbs when i'm hauling stuff- about 10lbs when i'm not.

If you're running the full 30-35 lbs that is probably why it is sitting so high.. Drop it down a little in pressure and then bounce it a few times. Should come down a bit (unless you like it 2" up :D )

graemlins/beers.gif I have 30 in them now and since I just installed them I haven't experimented much yet. When I aired them up I did not notice any increase in ride height from 0 pressure, it just made it stiffer. When I can get it on a lift I am going to deflate them and losen the control arm bolts and bounce it a few times to see if it will settle any. I had it in the air when i tightened the bolts cause I'm a big guy and couldn't get the uppers with it on the ground.

I don't really mind the look but I'd rather have the ride height like it was.

The ride is what worries me. I know it looks cool slamed, but how does it ride for a couple hundred miles. Thanks for the replies.

The ride is what worries me. I know it looks cool slamed, but how does it ride for a couple hundred miles. I was browsing in this topic and saw the question about air bags. My station wagon has the boxed control arms and sway bar from a 69 olds 442 with a set of air bags in the rear. The ride was a bit harsh with heavy duty springs, so I changed to a lighter rear spring and the ride became nice and firm, but not too stiff. When I load up the car, I raise the air pressure in the bags to about 25lbs from 15.
