Ive had the idea for along time, but might be close to making it.
I want to make a removable Hard top for my 72 convertible (like the Corvette or mecedes). The main reason is just because I have never seen it done.
My question is has anyone else seen it done?
I was going to cut a 2 door donor car roof originaly, but after telling SSuper Dave about it one day he had the great idea of using a 4 door donor roof. The lines are almost the same as a convertible. I have a spare covertible top frame and will use some/all of it to latch the roof in the front, but still tring to come up with a good idea on how to secure the rear (something like a Corvette comes to mind).
Any input/advise would be great.

I wonder if you could make a fiberglass mold from a hardtop. It would still be heavy but lighter then a steel hardtop. talk to some boat dealers to see if they could make them & you could sell them. Ask how many people would put a deposit down. Years ago I had a boat & some guy made tops for boats that slid back on tracks. remember boats dont have doors.

i made this fiberglass chop top. i have not got back to it, but it will become a removable hard top. i have had this and the idea you are talking about for a very long time. i have no doubt i can do it, i just dont have the time i used to. i use a pair of snow skies molded into the fiberglass roof for its strength and a place to graft the latches to. i think i would make the first roof out of metal and drywall mud becaue it is easier to work with once the roof is made cat a fiberglass mold from it. worry about how to attatch it later. i think thats the easy part. the only problem with this is that the roof is so big it becomes hard to take off and you cant store it in the car unless you have it seperate into sections. then sealing water out becomes an issue. it can be done. ts just lots of time. also for all the effort, you wount be able to recoupe yur money and people wnt want to pay you the amount of what it would cost you to make them.
actually, i have converrged the two ideas for myself and am now planning on using my chopped fiberglass top on my 70 convertible. the windshield frame is rusted real bad and needs to be replaces anyway. (i already have a good one) so when i replace it i will make the windshield choped so my to will fit on my convertible. then i will reverse engineer the folding frame in solidworks (autocad) and modify it to be a chopped rag top. this way i can go either hardtop or rag top.
