Hello all,

I have a 67' Chevelle that is in need of a new firewall (the original owner let the 396 swing into the firewall while removing it, bending it).

I have a couple of fellow chevelles.com folks offering firewalls from 66 cars & wagons. Any idea if 66 firewalls are the same as a 67? Both the donor and the receiving car are non-A/C if that is a factor. Just want to be sure before we hack up a car.

Thanks for reading!

How bad is your present firewall bent? It is very hard to believe, replacing your firewall would be less work than fixing the dent made by pulling a engine.

I agree with Bill. It can't be smashed THAT bad to justify the work involved in welding in new pieces. As a side note-I'm old enough to remember guys standing on the cowl of 55-57 Chev's and beating the hell out of the firewall with sledge hammers to gain clearance for big block installations. In later years we fixed these without too much hassle.

Bill/RickM,

Well, the firewall is not beyond repair (in fact I have a patch), but I'd prefer to weld in a new f/w at the spot welds. The body is on a rotisserie & is stripped, so any work of this scope is much more managable. I'd just prefer to have a clean, contiguous firewall without any filler or history of gratuitous beatings. Do you think this might be over the top for a backyard restorer? Is there a magic seam somewhere that will give me the chills (like when I see the monster mustache my mother-in-law has) when I try to drill it out? I haven't looked as close as I should, so your input would be much appreciated. Overall, though, I’d prefer to drill out the spot welds & MIG or TIG in a new one.
