getting ready to paint the chevelle and I have a question.

Base coat, clear coat--dupont
after I base the car, I tape it off to shoot the stripes.

now the questions

Is it OK to use a little soapy water to help get the strip kit straight?
Then what..wipe it with prep solve?
What kind of time frames here?
any help or ideas or things I need to know will be greatly apppreciated.

I'm not a professional painter anymore, and products have changed, but heres my advice.
If your car is metallic, you should get some clear on it before you start taping. I've heard there is a base clear that you might want to try.
You will disturb the metallic pattern with out clear in my opinion.

I agree with Roger. I would not put a stencil on the base coat. The stencils are VERY sticky. When I painted my 71SS stripes, I put one coat of clear down, then did the stripes the next day. I scuffud the clear, put the stencil down, sprayed the black base then cleared twice. It came out nice with no marks where the stencil was...Bill

That makes sense to me...base, clear, and then stripe it, then clear some more...

anyone else have thoughts on this..

Thanks

Buy some Standox clear basecoat # 11514 I believe is the number and shoot a good coat of this on panels with stripes. Let it dry for about an hour and do your stripes.OK to use soapy water just use a wet clean rag to wipe it off, the prepsol will attack the basecoat. After you pull your mask spray a couple coats back over your stripes let it sit and go ahead and clearcoat.Remember if the color is metallic you cannot sand it without reshooting color!!
Not positive about Dupont but should have a window from 24 to 72 hours before you have to clear.
You can also use clear but you need to wait a day
Sounds easy right, just take your time and don't rush it!! Mike Good Luck

Just a thought, sanding the clear TOO THIN will lift the paint when you apply the basecoat for the stripes. The solvents from the base will not have that PROPER barrier to prevent them from working under the clearcoat and lifting it. Yes I know some people(Ive done it) do this and do get away with it, but someday it will haunt them.
So basically I WOULDNT shoot the base then apply ONE coat of clear.

If you wait an hour or so you shouldnt have any problems. Have yet with PPG, doubt Dupont would be any different. The time window for Dupont is 24hrs.

You can add a colorless basecoat after shooting the main color. This "LOCKS" in the base and on the PPG line it restarts the clear time window. Wait about 30 mins for the colorbase to dry then you can add the stripes. Not sure what the product number is in Dupont but PPG's is DBC500 or DBU500 depending on product line. Dont intermix the products together. Am not saying apply that PPG colorless base over the Dupont, just giving numbers that might help you find that dupont product.

Not sure I would apply the standox over dupont either eventhou they do own standox. I have no idea since Ive never tried it. But Dupont WILL have a similiar product, usually named blending aid as it MAIN purpose is for a blend so the metallics will MELT into the old finish.

DONT USE a prep solv or wax grease remover on basecoat it WILL LIFT IT, just use water to wipe the surface of the base...Eric
