: do all convertible top windows line up like crap?
kingdaddycreel Sep 9th, 04, 11:38 PM I have a 1972 chevelle ss convertible that the windows line up like crap. They dont line up very good on the car and i have spent weeks trying to get them to line up to the point where they look correct. the angles where the top and quarter window (rear bend that goes horizontal)have a gap in it but hit nice everwhere else(yes they are convertible quarter glasses). The front doesn'thit the weather striping right up top ,when I get them close the door doesnt close right. (They are the right windows so you can rule that out). I have looked at other chevelle convertibles and i see that alot of them have this problem. Is this a common to the convertible? I am a mechanic and never had this kind of problem on my other hard top chevelles. I even had a new top put on thinkng it wasn't adjusted right...... might explain why so many of them end up rust buckets. Of coarse the fisher body manual doesn't help that much. Talk to me guys I want your opionion!

Joeks Sep 11th, 04, 1:07 PM Generally the answer is yes, at least ,mine do. They aren't as bad as yours sound, but nevertheless they do do line up well. My brother is a body and fender man and adjusted them as best he could. One corner doesn't quite come up enough, a little sag. We suspect after 39 years it's ok for things to sag. I'm sure the hinges have given enough that the windows don't have a chance. Good luck.
70isfine Sep 12th, 04, 12:49 AM How are your quarter windows? Are they sloppy when you roll them up and down. I would suggest you get new rollers and check all your regulators for wear. It is hard to get them right. When they line up nice they leak. To make them watertight they dont line up.BTDT. graemlins/clonk.gif
tmetzler Sep 12th, 04, 8:59 PM Mine don't line up worth crap either. I don't drive in rain, for that matter I don't drive unless the weather is nice and I can have the top down, so it's not a problem.
kingdaddycreel Sep 12th, 04, 9:47 PM the rollers have been rebuilt and the regulators are fine. I have worked with them a bit and they have gotten a little better.I will keep fighting with them graemlins/sad.gif thanks for all the info guys.... Feel free to send pics of your if you like its good for comparison. also where can you get new rollors ?I found some old stock but never saw any repos.

BAD415 Sep 13th, 04, 9:26 AM Mine dont fit the greatest either. No rain driving, and a fair share of air leak noise when they're up. Worked on them for a long time. I gave up on the idea of getting them to fit perfect.
Bob Tiley Sep 14th, 04, 12:01 AM I see you have been adjusting the windows but have you adjusted the top to fit the windows? The Fisher Body assembly manual has a nice section on top adjustments. Get a copy from any Chevelle parts dealer.
I have a 69 Convertible and after I adjusted the top frame everyting lines up well (It still drips in the rain but looks good).
tedixon Sep 17th, 04, 10:35 AM Not to interrupt the party, but the windows on my '65 line up fine and do not leak either. From the other comments, it seems that I never really appreciated this as much as I should.
kingdaddycreel Sep 17th, 04, 10:48 PM I have adjusted the top frame and even had a new one put on so i could check the frame....The area of the problem is the rear windows . the angles leave a gap in the back right up where weather strip goes from angle to flat. I can get front to rear looking alright but when i do i have that crazy gap in the top corners(where the round part of the quarter glass is). If i have to work the rest of my life i will figure it out.............I swear :D thanks for your replies.
topless Sep 25th, 04, 8:27 AM I have a 66 beaumont, rag top and did a frame off on it, my windows were fine befor I started, I ended having to get a glass man over he spend 5 hrs did his best, went home pissed off and they still are no hell, he was baffeld with trying to get them lined up, I did find some replacement rollers through national parts depot, they were a different design then mine but the nylon rollers were the same so I poped them off and put them on my old pins, good luck
kingdaddycreel Sep 26th, 04, 8:54 PM From what have read it looks like there is alot of convertibles out there that have the same situation mine does. I don't feel as bad now ......i am still fighting with them and actually have one that is with in acceptible limits(yee haw!) Just a couple more weekends to go  probally get to drive it around winter time :( figures huh? there is always nest year i guess.
eduardo69chevelle Sep 27th, 04, 9:28 AM Wow, I didn't expect this. My 69 was painted in the spring and I am taking it tomorrow to have the top put on. After that I will put the weatherstripping on the top frame and adjust the windows.
Anyone out there think I should have the weatherstripping and windows all located before putting the top on??? Am I doing this in the right order?
Ed
Peter F. Sep 27th, 04, 10:23 PM Yes, line it up before putting the top on. DO NOT install the top before lining up the windows. Get it so the top pins hit ahead of the windshield holes a little bit (maybe about 1/2 pin width or so) because the top will pull the frame backwards when it's installed.
If you install the top first you can't move the frame around if it's necessary.

eduardo69chevelle Oct 12th, 04, 9:45 AM Actually, the windows lined up better than expected. Biggest problem I have is the door closes pretty hard if the window is up into the top w'strip but that may get better with a little time.

Tom's 68 Oct 13th, 04, 7:53 PM just like that other guy
I to must have been real lucky
after the frame off every thing went back together great
no leaks but I do have a little whistle
never drive with the top up though
I would not have even noticed the whistle except the fact that when I got it inspected it was cloudy and looked like rain
first and only time I ever drove it with the top up
good luck guys
Chevy 70 SS vert Oct 16th, 04, 12:01 AM I recently purchased my '70 convertible and after 35 years the windows line up really well! The car was in outstanding shape! So I suspect like the others above your regulators and or rollers are probably worn and/or in need of replacement. Good Luck!
Pvt.Cowboy Nov 27th, 04, 5:15 PM Mine are pretty close to correctly located, but there's some irregularity to the window alignment if you have a sharp eye. It's nothing you notice right away.
A lot of this may be due to the fact that we're dealing with cars that are coming up on 40 years old in design technology. They weren't built evenly by robotics like a new BMW 7-Series convertible, after all. Some people look at my trunk lid and point out that it's not flushly-mounted precisely with the rear quarters. I just smile and tell them 'It's correct for a late '60s Chevy'.
richr Dec 1st, 04, 9:24 AM Well - I just tackled this project and it was challennging.
I had the top put on first with the weather stripping. I aligned the back windows first then the front. Then the back again and the front again. Then when the door panels went on, well, had to adjust a little more. What a PIA but it's done and they line up pretty well. I also had the issue with the back of the rear quarter window not exactly seating well in that corner. It's bassically impossible to get that corner perfect as the curve of the window does not match the shape of the weather strip.
The doors were difficult to close at first but they have gotten easier. All in all it took a few days, I'd align, curse, go in the house and start with a fresh head the next day.
