If a 1966 Convertible got the AM/FM with Multiplex option where would the speakers be located?

Rick,

I'm in the same boat that you are. I can't find a good place to put my rear spekers in my 66 convertible either. If you put them under the seat, the seat muffels them too much and if you put them in the rear floor pans, then they look bad. I saw the post that the guys in the 68 and up convertibles said that you mount them in the rear seat back panel but that won't work on a 66. I'm thinking about mounting mine in the trunk on the hump over the rear end but I'm thinking that they will be hard to hear as well. I know that I can hardly hear my rear speakers when I'm driving with the top down even when they're setting in the back floor boards. Seems like theres no way to win on a 66. The guys from Custom Autosound said just put in a good 3 way speeaker in the front dash and make the best of it.

My thought was if you ordered the Stereo/Multipex from the factory where did they put the speaker? One under the dash and the other one(s)?

I had 2 different 66's

First car I put in a popular brand aftermarket radio and 2 of the same companies speakers in the front and thought it sounded "tinny"

Next car I had the original single front speaker rebuilt and the original AM converted to AM / FM. Sounds a whole lot better.

You don't really need rear speakers - a single front speaker is OK in my book even at 60 with the top down.

But thats just my opinion -

on a 66 with factory AM/FM there are two speakers in the front kick panels, and I believe from what i have been told the rear speakers were mounted in the convertible top well, right in the cloth?????
I have a factory AM/FM with multiplex and original speakers, I have never mounted the multiplex or speakers yet, I just have the radio installed.

From what I understand, the rear speakers on the 1st generation Chevelle convertibles were mounted in special housings, or speaker boxes. These were in turn mounted on the trunk floor kick (that area also doubling as the convertible top well). I guess they must have been cut into the well liner, I don't really know for sure. I wouldn't like to think what would happen if water got into the well liner... Also they wouldn't work very well if the top were lowered, let alone if the boot was installed.
The Canadian Chevelles & Beaumonts didn't offer stereos or 8-tracks before '68.
When I checked the assembly manual, it only showed the front speaker installation and 8-track player installation. It went on elsewhere to state that certain parts were released by Chevrolet for installation by Fisher Body (including a pair of housings, part # 3919044 for convertibles). I’ve checked the Fisher Body Manual to see what is covered there, but so far I haven’t found it referenced.

I've even checked the 1966-1967 Chevelle SS396 Fact CD courtesy of Mystery Chevelle. Part numbers and illustrations are there, but not for the convertibles!
