: How rare would a 65 convertible SS be?
Not sure where I should post this, but this seemed like a good spot! I've seen an ad running here locally for a 65 Chevelle convertible SS... supposedly a real SS but not numbers matching. The ad states it is a really rare car, so my question is how rare? ANyone know what to look for to verify it is a real SS for that year??
Thanks,
Bill C.
Bill Pritchard Jun 17th, 04, 4:55 PM Well, they aren't exactly growing on trees, but I don't think I would call it "rare" unless it was a documented L79 or something. You'll be able to tell from the VIN if it's a real 65 SS convertible.
If it's just some yokel calling it "rare" because no one else on his block has one, then he's probably trying to justify an exorbitant price
BAD415 Jun 17th, 04, 7:24 PM These are off the top of my head....7995 SS rags were made out of the 9,995. So the Non SS Malibu ragtop would be the rare one in that case.
Joeks Jun 17th, 04, 10:55 PM Actually the rarity would be if it's a SS 6 cylinder. I'll have to look it up again, but I think the number made is between 1,00 and 1,300.
FIG Jun 18th, 04, 10:42 AM I sure do know someone that would get rid of her 71 if she found a 65 conv... If your not interested care to share?
Well, right now I don't have the money to buy any new toys, but it sure would be nice!!
If anyone is seriously interested, I'd be happy to take a look at it for you. You can let me know here or email me at billcurrent@yahoo.com. BTW, the price in the paper is $6,000. Actually, here is the whole ad: RARE CLASSIC 1965 Super Sport Chevelle Malibu convertible, in need of complete restoration. This is a true Super Sport. Original console, wheels, radio, Super Sport emblems. NOT a #s matching car. $6000 or best offer.
I'll have to dig up the number if anyone is interested.

tedixon Jun 21st, 04, 5:04 PM I have a '65 Chevelle 300 convertible. This model (that is, a non-Malibu Chevelle convertible) was produced only in Canada, according to the people on the Canadian Chevelle website. I do not have any idea how many were made, but it is supposed to be a "rare" car. Unfortunately, that is not the kind of "rare" that anyone will pay extra for - I certainly did not.
tedixon Jun 21st, 04, 5:10 PM BTW, $6000 is way too much to pay for a project car. I paid about that for my '65 convertible and it was in good condition when I bought it. Nice '65 convertibles sell on eBay for not much more than $6000.
djchevelle65 Jun 24th, 04, 7:48 PM TE, not sure that I agree. 65 convertibles (especially the SS) in good condition are selling for much more than $6000, even on e-bay. You may find a nice Chevelle Malibu Coupe for $6000 (running with minimal work needed to be a good driver), but not an SS Convertible. BTW, if you have the cash, it might be worth taking a second look. Make sure it has a good engine and minimal body work to be done (a 4 speed is a plus).
BAD415 Jun 24th, 04, 9:39 PM I paid $6k for a basketcase
My resto page(s) www.geocities.com/eosupersport65 (http://www.geocities.com/eosupersport65)
Joeks Jun 24th, 04, 10:39 PM If it's restorable I doubt you'll get any convertible for less than $6K.
