: Why are so many interiors black?

Just to help my own curiosity...

I understand it's easier to clean and looks 'bitch'n', but it seems it would be the most uncomfortable color to sit in. Did Detroit make them this way - pushing the color onto consumers, or did people actually prefer to buy black - causing the demand?

I'm changing most of my interior to a lighter color, except the dash and floor, since the car is also black. (wife requirement, which I'm more than happy to do).

I suppose because the cars were ordered that way, either by the person buying it or by the dealer to stock what they thought would sell best.

A black interior shoulda come with A/C! I'd use it with the top down. I think black was just easier to match with all the exterior colors. The drop-top was inching towards extinction about this time, so it was probably an economic decision by GM.

Count me in for something other then black. My favorite ragtop interior color white but I recently bought a 70 Elky that the previous owner had dyed all the plastic light saddle. It is really growing on me. I sprayed the dash to match and ordered new door panels and installed them and man does it look good against the hugger orange body. Here is what it looks like if you want to see. The car had nothing for the interior installed (including the dash) when I got it. http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/jnorth/IMG_0592.JPG

I might put this color interior in one of my convertibles. Either way niether of them will have black interior.

Black was indeed a very poular interior color back in the 60's and early 70's. Visually, it went well with most any color exterior. But, speaking from personal experience, it is a graemlins/angry.gif in a convertible!! Prior to this Chevelle, we had a 69 Impala convertible for 18 years. It had a Parchment (white) interior, and it was much cooler and more comfortable on warm days.

I changed mine because I had to. I bought the car with no back seat, tore up door panels and the previous owner had told the body shop to paint it a different color (ZINC YELLOW). So, when I bought it, I thought black would be the better color, plus I was having black stripes put on it. Another reason, I liked the black interior in my Mustang, so I wanted black in my Chevelle. I also didn't think too many colors would match the yellow paint job. The car was previously Green w/Green interior and the original headliner was in the car and MAN was it ugly (no offense to those with green headliners :D ).

I think it was up to the customer (unless you bought a 300 Deluxe) and as stated before, black went with everything. So I don't think the auto industry was pushing anything. Different story today, they wised up and realized how costly it was for them to be carrying all these different colors. Today, it's almost like the days of Henry Ford, you can have any interior color you want as long as it's gray or tan!
Hmm, earth tones are back in style now, maybe they should consider dropping the grays? (I'm sure it's already being discussed)
