View Full Version : How many 70 SS Convertibles? Motorhead396 Apr 16th, 04, 6:30 AM Does anyone know the number of 70 SS convertibles produced? 70ChevelleRagtop Apr 16th, 04, 11:30 AM I taped a show from the History channel on Convertibles a while back. They had a short segment on the LS6 Chevelle convertible. I can't remember the exact numbers of the LS6 cars but I do know it was less than 20. As for LS5 or the 396 cars, I don't know. True SS ragtops are not very common. I've seen more clones (mine included) than the real deal. novadude Apr 16th, 04, 11:46 AM I don't know that there is any credible information to state how many SS ragtops were built, since the SS package was an option on the V8 Malibu. I'd imagine it was a relatively small percentage of cars, so I'd GUESS we are talking like 2000-3000 tops. I can assure you that most of the ones you see these days are clones... I know ours is! smile.gif As a side note, I remember in 1984 (I was in my early teenage years, but spent all of my time reading about Chevelles, Novas, etc), a guy that lived up the street from us has a LEGIT SS convertible for sale (4-sp car). He had owned it since the early 1970's, and he had sold-off the original 396 (after it blew) and replaced it with a 327. The car was very clean... blue with blue bucket seat interior, white stipes and top. The car had the discs, 12-bolt, etc. The asking price? $2500! Some young kid bought the car, and wrapped it around a pole HARD a few weeks later, totaling the Chevelle. Another one bites the dust.... graemlins/sad.gif I'll bet many REAL SS cars suffered a similar fate, while the mundane 307 cars led a more pampered life. ohhawk Apr 16th, 04, 5:52 PM The answer to the question is "no" but Dan Carr's poster does as good a job as any in giving best "guesstimates" based on a variety of data that he used (% of convt's to all body styles in those years where GM data is known, etc.). He shows for 1970: Total convertibles (SS and non SS) - 7522 Non SS - 6202 SS 396 (L34) - 1088 SS 396 (L78) - 46 SS 454 (LS5) - 91 SS 454 (LS6) - 95 The number of 17 for LS6 convertibles is one I've heard on several occasions as well. Could be correct or could be a number meant to mean known survivors. Dan, if you're out there please feel free to jump in with your thoughts. ss68rag Sep 12th, 04, 12:17 PM They made about 1300 BB converts in 70 and there are only about 10,000 of them left today.
