: Water infiltration
RickyD Apr 14th, 04, 11:24 AM How do you guys keep the water out of the car? I just had a new top, bow, rubbers and all windows adjusted and water keeps running in like I had done nothing to prevent it.
The main problem is where the top bow meets the windshield bow and the side glasses, right at the upper corner. It just keeps running in, even when I wash the car???
Someone told me, these cars had that problem from day one...
Thanks for your help

72soft-top Apr 14th, 04, 12:55 PM I park in a garage.
All convertibles leak. Even if you don't notice any water, it's leaking.
cperrell Apr 14th, 04, 2:44 PM You might try to put some sealant around the plate on the windshield bow where the top latches. Water could be leaking behind or around the plate.
Did you use a good quality seal? I have bought some seals that fit really poorly. I have heard that metro is the best, followed by sofseal. Most of the big parts houses (OPG, NPD, etc.) buy whomever is cheapest at the time, so you may end up with Metro one time and some no name brand from china the next.
PS: Whats with the "poll"? Are you supposed to be voting on whether your car leaks or not?
droptop396 Apr 14th, 04, 4:27 PM Water is a classic cars enemy.
I keep my car covered when not being used,
I use the california duster to maintain the cleanliness.
I will use a garden pump sprayer with water to mist the surface if needed.
and use professional dry wash and detailing products.
A garden hose and soaking the car is bad news.
These cars never really drained well even when new, I would hate to risk my restoration to moisture sitting in the doors, lower quarters and so on.,
RickyD Apr 14th, 04, 4:31 PM I used SoftSeal all around.
God knows how I voted for anything???
1966_L78 Apr 15th, 04, 2:14 PM Another thing to consider with the new top and weatherstripping, is the adjustemnt of the top and side windows... Maybe they just need to be adjusted...
My convertible had NO top for 8+ years, and now the new top is only 1.5 years old and I have only "washed" the top once (Beginning of last Summer)... I guess I will be washing it again soon, but I just try to be careful near those areas that I think leak...
Bob Tiley Apr 17th, 04, 2:02 AM I wash mine all the time and drove it as my daily driver for 8 years in the rain and snow of eastern PA. I since restored it, but it doesn't leak bad, only a few drops down the inside side glass and I just dry it with a towel. I used Metro and Softseal weatherstrips and wouldn't use anything else. I had an off brand header seal and it didn't fit well. Get a repro Fisher body manual for a 68 to 72 A-body - It has plenty of info on adjusting the convertible top frame and windows for a good seal. It was plenty helful for convertible top info. The only place mine leaks bad is the passenger kick panel vent. water that comes down the cowl comes in around the vent and wets the floor. I have resealed it twice with Strip Caulk but still no luck. (It was fine before I took it apart.)
Toplischevelle Apr 19th, 04, 5:43 PM I agree with the others maybe somthing is way out of whack, my convert leaks but I cant complain its not bad and I have been in real bad down pours where I could hardly see. I drive her in almost anything.
RicksRag Jun 1st, 07, 10:28 PM Yep, they all leak !!!
Best bet is
A. Stay out of the rain :)
B. Carefull hand washing ;)
