: I bought a COPO
alss Jun 30th, 04, 11:05 PM Well its official...I own a 69 COPO Chevelle!! graemlins/hurray.gif Car is fairly original...or painfully depends on how you look at it. It was obviously raced and has about 19000 miles on the odometer. The car has been in inside storage for many years and so the body is very solid...no panel replacement needed, but some small parts are missing. Car comes with two build sheets and some other documentation and has a CE block(swallowed a valve in 1971). Color is fathom green with a black bench seat and M-22 4-speed. Trans and rear match the POP. Car will be home in two weeks and I'll post pictures then.

Sounds like a find! The '69 COPO is one of my favorites. Does this mean that you finally have enough 1969 Chevelles hanging around?
Cam, yu can never have enough 69 Chevelles :D , unfortnatley my 69 vert left yesterday. It was sad seeing go down the road on the trailer never to return graemlins/sad.gif

Bill Pritchard Jul 1st, 04, 1:56 PM Glad to see that he's evidently not one of the Mopar crowd that despises every other brand of vehicle!

Again, congrats on the new ride, and consider this a personal invite to the Supercar Reunion (http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=UBB2)! graemlins/beers.gif

YenkoChevelle69 Jul 10th, 04, 9:22 PM Killer Albert! Color me confused, but why does the build sheet read L78? I see the 9566AA which entails the copo order but why does it have a 375hp RPO on it?
Ls6Convertible Jul 10th, 04, 10:32 PM because all copos were listed as 375s on the buildsheets
COPO PETE Jul 11th, 04, 8:43 AM Congrats on the find. You will love driving that thing!!!!! They ride great and haul a$$! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Cam Jul 13th, 04, 12:17 AM In an interview with Jim Mattison in Musclecar Review a few years back, he stated that they didn't even realize that those COPO Chevelles had 427s in them until they actually read the bill of materials. That was the idea, to get it down the line & out the door as just a Chevelle SS396 minus the SS396 emblems. The L78 was just another part of the deception since they are visual clones of the L72 427. No air cleaner decals from the factory either!
alss Jul 13th, 04, 9:04 AM NO decals!! thats cool, I like the sleeper effect :D Thanks for the info

Bain Jul 13th, 04, 10:13 PM Hey Albert,
Check out ebasy No. 2483854868, you weill see a fairly decent looking COPO. There are a few anomolies I haven't adressed yet.
The SS in Back will probably take that off
The Kick panels inside, those will stay
The SS Ralley Wheels, I think there was a wheel that was more non descript you see them a ,lot on Camaros
The CD player
Other than that it is a pretty good looking COPO.
I just heard from the 5th owner of the car and he owned it for 20 years, bought it with 36,000 miles on it, and stated unequivicolly that it had the numbers matching427 in it when he bought. Restamps in 1982 were not a big thing, as the car was in it's lows of depreciation and a stamp meant nothing for value. Claims he knew the 2nd owner a guy named Mark English who boiught it with 20,000 miles on it with the same No matching motor, and KQ 4:10 rear end.
I guess you are going to have some fun with that restoration, lots of work to do.
Gongrads on your purchase, can I asked how much you paid??
Al
Dan Orgill Jul 14th, 04, 12:13 PM ALbert,
I've photocopied that article for you, so you'll have it in Niag. Falls.
Just a note about the decals; Roger Gibson had restored a COPO in the early 90's. He spoke with the origianl owner who remembered that the car came with no air cleaner decals. Roger added them anyway, using his " 90% Call " - that being if 90% of the cars came with it, it was likely meant to be there.
He also claims that the COPO cars equipped with a TH400 were HYDRAULICALLY cammed at 410hp.
Any truth to that? Keep in mind this article is from 1991, but I always found anything I read regarding Roger Gibson well researched.
Chevy454 Jul 14th, 04, 6:23 PM The automatic COPOs got the same "143" cam that the 4-speed cars got...

Thanks! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Chevy454 Jul 17th, 04, 11:22 AM YenkoChevelle69: I could, but you'd probably not be too impressed with a primered shell and a pile of parts! Our plan is to have our Nova finished in time for the Supercar Reunion (http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=UBB2), then start on the Chevelle soon after. My goal is to have it for the 2005 fall Pure Stock race in Stanton...
YenkoChevelle69 Jul 17th, 04, 11:50 AM Well that sure sounds like fun. Do you have any pictures of the Chevelle with the Yenko Decals etc still on it? Kind of cool to see what they look like after they are found all these years later in various stages of disrepair.
Chevy454 Jul 17th, 04, 12:09 PM Unfortunately, "no". It's been apart for a like 15 years, and somewhere in that time it was sanded a bit and then primered...but, thanks to a lead from this site, I'm supposed to be getting a video of the car prior to it being stripped of the majority of it's original parts! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
YenkoChevelle69 Jul 17th, 04, 1:57 PM Wow, now that sounds really cool. graemlins/thumbsup.gif Good luck. BTW, what color was it?
Chevy454 Jul 17th, 04, 1:59 PM Fathom Green with a dark green vinyl top...as of now, only Yenko known with a non-black vinyl top. Just wish it had green guts...
