: Small block to Big Block
Autoengineer Dec 16th, 04, 1:22 AM I really want to take my small block out and replace it with a BB. I've already spoke to an engine builder on the phone and I was going to pay him a visit and get a quote. What additional things on the car will I need to upgrade or change? I know I'll need new front springs to support the weight and new headers. Anything else?
dirty_dawg Dec 16th, 04, 7:50 AM I believe the radiator
Thad Dec 16th, 04, 8:13 AM Accessary brackets, for the alterator, power steering pump, A.C. compressor, (if so equipped).
You will like the change, as the easy power of a big block is almost addicting. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
70 Elco Joe Dec 16th, 04, 9:25 AM You'd want a 4 core radiator with the BB and AC. Brackets and Pulleys are different. Dont need to change the alternator unless you want a higher output one. Ac compressor and PS pump will work with the right BB brackets. Fan shroud and good 7 blade clutch fan. Probably a bigger carb and maybe bigger fuel line depending on what you get and what you have.
red68chevL Dec 16th, 04, 11:06 AM Possibly starter, motor mounts, and, if you get crazy with the new motor, a new hood to cover the RAT!
Adam Loose Dec 16th, 04, 11:08 AM Probably some new tires after the BB is in for a couple of days ;)
Cecil Dec 16th, 04, 12:35 PM Some BB are externally balanced, others are internal. Unless you're buying a complete engine, make sure you get the right balancer/flex plate for the engine you are getting...
dittoz Dec 16th, 04, 3:11 PM Some of the things mentioned above are going to be dependent upon what motor is coming out...
A 350 (as in our case) uses some of the same components as a big block, such as fuel line and motor mounts. Most peripheral brackets will be different, as will the carb since fuel consumption will increase, the bigger radiator, accelerator cable may or may not, oh, and the fan shroud definitely will.
We're in the midst of this project right now, and these are the things that come to mind...

OLDED Dec 17th, 04, 11:27 AM Add a strong passenger side grab "sissy" bar and throw away vinyl seat covers to protect the upholstery - maybe for both sides!
Bob West Dec 17th, 04, 9:57 PM Torque converter?? it will work,as will the 3 row a/c radiator that was in mine,,,and I used the shroud also when swapping from a 350 to my current 454.
mingoman Dec 18th, 04, 12:11 AM Was your small block a 307? I was told to change the frame mounts on my '71 Malibu to change to a big block. I changed mine out just to be sure with a set off a 350 car before I put in the 402.
Bob West Dec 18th, 04, 1:43 AM Mine was a 350 2v w/a th350....454 dropped right in.
