I can't remember for sure but they are either for the windshield washer hoses or access holes to your wiper linkage

You got it they are for the hoses

If you're trying to be "correct", I don't think those screens were available on any 70 chevelles. I've got them as many others do because they look correct (even if they aren't) and keep leaves, etc. out.

are you serious? something got to go there also i dont see why the washer hose will go thru there i think it will get tangle in the wiper linkage. storm

This has been discussed several times in the past and the consensus was, Chevelles never had the grills in the cowl. They were used in other cars and do fit Chevelles but were not put in Chevelles at the factory. Some think they were used in air cars only but that, to my knowledge, has never been proven. The best way to know is, if it is shown in any of the assembly manuals, and it isn't.
If your looking for 100% correctness, don't use them... graemlins/sad.gif

The washer hoses go thru the cowl, not the screens (that aren't suppose to be there)...
If you look in the assembly manual it will clearly show the hoses coming thru holes in the cowl, as shown in this pic of my 68...

Those grilles are "correct" for '68 chevelles. '69 and later never had them.

If the screens are not supposed to be there, then was there something else or is it just supposed to be open?

I have the Service guide Parts book and they don't list grills or show any pic of them. Also the assembly shows the cowl area on many pages, including the w/w hose routing, and shows nothing about grills. If you have some info that can prove 68's had grills, I'd sure like to here about it. You can't just state they had them without showing where your information came from. I'm always willing to learn. If they're suppose to be in my 68 and you can show me proof, I'll have them in the car in a couple days...

Bill, I'm sure I read it on this site, so maybe it's incorrect. A quick search in the "resto" forum revealed some inconclusive info that maybe it was just Buick, Olds, and Pontiacs that had them and Chevelles never did.

I've been wrong once before smile.gif

70 Montes didn't have them either. Maybe they were only on Buick, Olds, and Pontiac?

stroobydoo, that area is just supposed to be open. Personally, I would use them anyway - too few people understand that they weren't there originally.

Well here we go. I took some pic's of mine. They look correct but I do not know. It has clips that hold the screen in place. It looks factory to me.

It even conforms to the ridge in the cowl. Like I said I do not know if this is correct or not but the rest of the car is. Some of the forum members have helped me a bunch just trying to return the favor.

That is NOT the screen I've been talking about - Haven't seen that before. Mine are plastic pieces that fit into each hole of the cowl area.

These are the grills we've been talking about..

I've seen that mesh on Buick A-bodies only. Maybe someone who has parted out a bunch of cars can contribute further.

Sorry to confuse, I just wanted to add that there were more then the plastic ones out there. Yes I knew that you were talking about the plastic ones. My Heavy Chevy with a cowl hood has them. Maybe it makes a difference in what hood and where the car was made.

Xtreme70SS396,
Thanks for the reply. My 70 has the 3 piece plastic grills.

I have had my 70 Chevelle SS since I came back from Vietnam in 1970 and when I purchased it and to this day it does not have a screen on the cowl. Whether it was to have it or not, it never did.
