: what to do with my old 283

what can i add to my mostly stock 283? im sure the stock cam can be improved on at least. just gonna be for a daily driver (just something to tote me around when im actually home), so i dont need anything wild. cars got a 3.08 rear, TH350, and an edelbrock performer intake and a set of hooker headers i havnt put on yet. right now i got the old intake/carb off and im wondering whether or not to change the heads, they are some old '461' 327 heads probably with 1.94/1.50 valves and 64cc chambers, which i guess drops the compression ratio down to about 8.0-8.5:1, so i must be losing power there.

so heres what im looking at:
HEI Distributor (or an ignitor II for the old points)
carb: not too sure, i have an old Holley 1850 could rebuild, Edelbrock 500cfm, Demon Jr. 525cfm, any reccomendations?
new cam: maybe a comp cams XE262H
heads: is it worth getting new heads, thinking about World Torquer 305 58cc heads (kind of expensive though)

What about an engine rebuild (Bore the cylinders, grind crank, and balence, as well as new gaskets) It should hold a few ponies in the rebuild. As you said with the new headers, intake, carb, and HEI, it should get up and move. :D What are you installing it in?

rings were re-done a few years ago before i got it, i just planned on putting a new oil pan gasket on and i also have a new fuel pump.

its going in my '66 sedan

If you are going to build the 283 for performance, build a complete system: Torquer 305 heads, .420"-.440" lift cam, and a complimenting torque converter.

If you are just going to be putsing around town, go with a milder cam and use your old heads.

Either way, I'd go with the HEI. Dale Johnson @ the Mag Shop builds a nice one.

think these heads might be worth it?

I'd lean more towards these for a 283

Put a nice small solid cam in it, or hydraulic if you dont want to set lash. You'll have a nice little cruiser.

OR you can go here: http://www.competitionproducts.com/page47.html
And get a cam kit with new cam, lifters, springs, retainers, locks, and seals to freshen up your heads. Can't beat it for only $129. The E1128 would be a nice cam in that 283, since its on a 110LSA it would help build cylinder pressure, which would help with your lower compression. I wouldnt go any bigger than that though, not in a 'stock' 283

HEI for sure, I have one with a newer (2000 miles) cap, coil, and module. E-mail me if interested.

An edelbrock 500 would work great.

Then get yourself a nice timing chain. Throw on the headers and your performer manifold and enjoy!
