The problem with gutting the pump is that it increases the temperature inside the combustion chamber-which-can overheat valves. This can cause leaking valves and other problems. My 72 chevelle runs a smog pump-never had a problem. If your car has to be tested for pollution without the insides -it won't pass. ... graemlins/beers.gif

Smog pumps do not take a lot of power to run, so if you are looking for performance there is probably not a lot of gain to be had by disabling it. However, if you have a bad pump, then removing the vanes from the pump might be the answer for you. If your state does a physical inspection of the emissions hardware, then you ought to keep a pump in place. Today's emissions standards for the older cars are pretty easy to pass if your car is tuned up properly. My cars do not have the pumps anymore and they pass OK with HC levels of 75ppm to 175ppm; the limit for my cars is 400ppm HC.

Its not a horse power thing or an emissions thing,, its the popping noise it makes as the throttle backs down

That sounds like once of the valves on the tubes to the manifolds may be bad. The pump on my Olds used to do that, then I took it off and threw it away and the problem went away smile.gif .
