OK guys I set the timing on my 64 tonight...
12deg initial and 36 at 3000 rpm all this was done with the vac adv plugged.... Went out gave it H E double hockey sticks and man it had a pinging soundlike crazy... Never did this before... We set the timing off ear and been runnin it that way until now. What to try now???
Bump it back some??

If you have the vacuum advanced hooked back up now, unhook it and plug the vacuum supply and take it for another spin you may be pulling to much vacuum advance and need to limit it to around 10*.

Brian Brian,
Was it pinging at WOT, or part throttle?
If at WOT: With the AFR head, you might be okay with 34 total. If that doesn't work, you could richen it up a little, put in a cooler thermostat, or boost your octane.
If it was at part throttle, you could try the above, and limit your vacuum advance.

The pinging happened at WOT.. Was I wrong to do all this timing with the vac adv disconnected??
Is it 10-12 degrees under 750 rpm then just check the adv or do I advance at the distrib at 3000 rpm to make sure its getting 36degrees?

Hey there if you have the HEI dist they are know for pinging problims.Had one of thoes on my old 66 Beaumont. This is what i did I made a vacume advance limiter out of a piece of tin.My BB liked 18 degs at idel and 36 at 3000.with out the limiter it would ping like crazey.this limiter stops the vac rod from going to far giving to much advance at idel and part throtle.U do wont advance hook up if doing any street driving for gas milage.
