I recently bought a 1970 SS396 that is color code (78)- Black Cherry after my 1973 Z-28 was stolen after working on it for 14 years.
The paint is faded, cracked and crazed. My questions are:

Is Black Cherry a rare color for a 70 SS396?

I always wanted a Cranberry red/black stripe chevelle - will a color change affect its value very much.

Could you order black sport stripes with blck cherry?

The car has 62K miles, 4 spd, SS396, buckets,
console, posi, cowl induction AM/FM stereo.
2nd owner of 26 yrs gave me the original exh
manifolds, carb, intake and alt. Motor is correct for the car but not numbers matching.
I just found the build sheet in pass door 100% intact tonight to prove its an SS L34.

Whats the general opinion - will I destroy the value of the car by changing the color to red/black or is the color rare enough to repaint it the correct color with black stripes? Any views/opinions appreciated.
thanks,

My 1970 SS454 is black cherry w/white stripes (check my sig) I think it's a pretty unique combo. Not sure how rare it is colro wise, but I've never seen another one in person.I'm pretty sure sure you couldn't order black cherry w/black stripes. As far as the color change goes,if you want the car cranberry red w/black stripes,go for it.I'm sure the value won't change. My 70 SS396(check my sig) was originally green mist w/black stripes, now it's red w/black stripes, and I'm sure the value hasn't been affected.IMO,I'd stay with the black cherry...it grows on you http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

The value will drop because everybody know bright red cars are slower http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Just kidding, I don't think the value will change from you changing colors. The only way the color would increase value is if it was the original paint and still in great condition.

I love to see unique color combo's. Black Cherry with Black stripes would be great! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

The value wouldn't be hurt. I think wild custom colors would be more harmful to the value ie., Heavy Metalflake etc.

I think your color combo would be very suttle and classy! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Go for it I want to see the pics!
