The cap on the power steering fluid reservoir on my 67 Chevelles reads Automatic Transmission Fluid Type A ... The reservoir is mountd behind the driver side headlights ... What is Type A fluid? I have not seen it anywhere I can recall. I bought the car 2 yrs ago. It was running like a top when I bought it ...still going strong! I had assumed it would use regular power steering fluid ... Can someone please clarify this for me. During the restoration, the previous owner did everything back to stock... Thanks in advance ...steven t.

Dexron III is the replacement for type a trans fluid. All of the older gm power steering used the type a trans fluid. Power steering fluid may work also????? I would use the dexron

Power steering fluid that is available at all GM dealers is specifically formulated to work with the Saginaw pump. It will also work very well in the older Saginaw pumps.

Way back when, automatic transmission fluid was interchangeable with power steering. But through the years, automatic transmission fluid changed to meet transmission clutch, higher temperatures, bearing, etc requirements. The powertrain people made changes based on transmission needs without regard to the Saginaw pump.

Saginaw worked with GM lubricants and Texaco to come up with a specific fluid for the Saginaw power steering pumps. That is the fluid that is factory fill and available at the dealerships.

A lot of cans labeled power steering fluid at K-Mart, Pep Boys, etc says that they meet GM requirements. I can verify that Saginaw never tested those other fluids.

The only fluid with hundreds of thousands of laboratory hours and millions of vehicle test miles is the GM fluid.

The latest GM part number for power steering fluid is 89020661. It is just the latest fluid with the latest formulations. It replaces the 1050017 fluid.
