actually there were only 189,970 v-8 2dr malibu's in 71, compaired to 207,598 in 72 and 289,622 in 70. The 71 is the rarer of the three years.

Also a powerglide was on option in 71 according to my 1971 Chassis Service Manual and factory assembily manual.

1971 production numbers show that 66,625 M35 powerglides were sold that year. 13% of the possible 521,161 Chevelles had them. That compares to 402,488 TH350s (M38) installed that year. Not a rarity, but maybe not very many have survived.

Tony, didn't mean to ask you if you knew whether you had 2 or 3 gears. LOL! I was wanting to you to look and see if the shift indicator on the dash/console showed how many forward gears.

You learn something new everyday. I had NO idea that you could still get a 'Glide in 1971. Sounds like a moderately rare find. Hope you enjoy her! graemlins/beers.gif

my car is an all origional 71 that came with a 307 glide and the G92? 3.08 performance rear, and black interior. it now has a 305 in it. but other than that. its all stock, even to its single exhaust (yeah so wat if its got a glass pack).

I didn't even know the 70 malibu's had a power glide option until I bought my Malibu 2 weeks ago, it was a 307/PG car and now has a 350 inplace of the 307. I had never seen a powerglide 70,71, or 72' at any car show before.

I had a 71 with a 307/PG combo. It was a 4 door I got for free, I ended up scrapping it. I've seen plenty of them at car shows all around here.

My Dad has a 71 that still has the PG but a 350 in place of the 307. You don't see many of them at car shows because they suck, just my opinion. They are great for an all out drag car, but not much fun on the street and you give up some acceleration to a three or four speed auto. I make fun of my dad sometimes. I give him the WAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! BA-WAAAAAAAAAAAH! treatment. One shift really sucks.

You could get Powerglides on big Chevies, Monte Carlos & Chevelles through 1972 with the base engines (6 or 8). GM kept those things going way too long; Ford gave up 2-speeds after '64, Chrysler gave up after '59. Even Studebaker & AMC used 3-speed automatics in the early 60s.

Remember that Chevy was the value division at GM. Often Chevies were bought by cheapskates, or dealers lowballed showroom cars by equipping them with 'V8s and automatics' (Powerglide is an automatic after all). I've seen numerous 69 & 70 Impala Custom Coupes with Powerglides, surprisingly. Drum brakes were another way to cut the price.
If I were handed an option sheet back in that era I think that I would take full advantage of the good stuff on the menu, but that's hindsight.

You want to see an oddball Chevy trans? The Torque-Drive was offered from mid-68 through 71 on 4 and 6 cylinder engines and made appearances on Camaros, Novas and Vegas. It was simply a semi-automatic Powerglide without a valve body. For drivers who were scared of using a clutch they could plunk down $68 for it.

Torque drives = short lived, bad idea, junk. You could do the same thing by manually shifting a power glide except a torque drive gave you the option of starting off in high gear. Tell me what's the purpose of that?

Powerglides made their last appearance on 1973 models. Not to mention 307 engines.

I wonder how much cheaper it is to build a car with drum brakes.

I hear you Dean. How much cheaper would drums actually cost to produce? I guess it was more about marketing and 'what can we charge for this'.

Also Dawg was right, 1973 was the end of the line for Powerglides. They were only used in Vegas & 6-cyl Novas at that point and were quietly dropped around March of '73.
