What I mean to ask is, what should you look for, when you stumble on a nice complete looking old Holley, at a swap meat ?

How would you identify, an L-78, L-72, or other original holley carb, from something somebody bought of a speed shop shelf ?

I didn't bother to get any numbers and wouldn't know where to look.

The seller says he had it on a hot small block in his street rod, and it just dumped too much fuel into the engine. Said he didn't know what it was.

Looked in nice shape, and it occured to me that it might be a good score, should I ever try to put my 68 closer to right.

Thad,
The oem Holleys will have a GM part number on them along with the Holley number.

Also Thad, adding to what Bill has said, GM carbs would have a date code on them which would identify an original equipment GM or a service replacement GM. For example, for my 1969 L78 4346 carb, I've seen dates as late as 1973 for this part. Hope all this helps.

Thanks Gents graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I'm thinking anything OEM would have vacuum secondarys, and a choke as well.

I'm going back this morning, most venders were still setting up, yesterday.

The barrels look pretty big, and if its got a GM #, and I can snag it cheap, I may add it to my collection of garage stuff. :D

Another thing about OEM Holleys (at least the 1966 L78 #3613 and the 1969 L78 #4346 carbs, so I'd assume the other years too), is that they have a "divorced" choke setup (where the little coil spring bolts into the intake manifold)...

There's also a small vacuum diaphragm to pull off the choke...

Another visual feature is the primary bowl vent (external) with linkage and a rubber flapper valve... I have seen one 3310 with that setup...

Of course, these aren't really noticable with the air cleaner on and don't affect performance...
