: sacrifice a gto for a chevelle?

got my chevelle convertible recently, chassis shot, spent months looking for a replacement, finally bought a gto with a good chassis. so... i'll brace her up, lift gto, take chassis, shine 'er up, and put it under my chevelle. i'd keep gto intact for future restoration, maybe.now that she is half apart, man, entire trunk area is like new, all braces are real good, rockers are very good also. cowl area has a little rust at bottom. i know for a fact i need a good deal of metal. would it be sacrilege to hack up that old goat?

Old cars are not made anymore,
cut up one for the other, shame, if the GTO
is in better condition... sell the GTO to buy the parts for your ragtop. sheetmetal , such as floors, trunk, etc... is avaliable in all
restoration parts cataloges.. ae YEAR ONE.

I will buy the goat, before you cut it up.

as to the frame, I hope the gto is a ragtop,
the hard top cars have a different frame
from the convertibles.

AGIAN... DO NOT CUT UP THE GTO

I know of a yard that has at minimum 4 chevelles with good frames in So. Cal.

I'd use the chevelle as a parts-car for the GTO. I'd rather have a GTO than any chevelle of the same year. You can't deny they're better looking.

I love my chevelles, but I'd trade in a heartbeat for a GTO in the same condition.

as said before, if it ain't a convert GTO, it won't be right. Call Sundell's for a frame for the Chevelle. ph# 724-794-6827 in Slippery Rock, Pa.

Ditto, I think every year Chevelle is better looking than the same year GTO.
Taste is subjective.

But the GTOs do have a nicer interior most years, tend to have more nice options.

But for heavens sake don't destroy a restorable one. They are bitchin cars in their own right.

..I will say a black on black 68 Goat is a bad ass looking car (and my favorite year GTO),but I wouldn't give up my 70 SS454 for it.

Sorry, I indeed love some year GTO's, but I can deny that they are better looking  The only year GTO I would consider swaping my 69 Chevelle for would be a 65, and it would have to be damn nice

leo p, it is a '71 gto convertible, with a really nice chassis. i had been pointed to sundell's, but they wanted a small ransom for a chassis. tomorrow i lift the gto body, get the chassis ready for my chevelle. for now, the gto will be mothballed. in the years to come perhaps me or my son(s) will get to her. they are great cars too, but money does'nt grow on trees.
thanks, guys.

Absolutely, contact Sundell. His son sends them up from N.C., where my 72 frame came from. Some surface rust, blasted and powdered....better than new. If it needs bushing holes fixed, he has a local shop (excellent welder) do the repair. I paid $550. about 2 years ago. I hauled it out of Slippery Rock in the back of my pickup.

find a frame and leave the goat in one piece. Frames pop up here every so often. What about the guy that just located that junk yard in NY that hhe says has a bunch of velles in. Maybe there is one with a good frame there.

Herb
Nov 16th, 04, 11:21 AM
Maybe I messed something, what year chevelle frame are you in need of? Also, I thought the only difference between the cocupe and the convert frame was one length of boxing in the center section, on each side. That's an easy do for a welding shop.

I'm gonna have a complete 67 coupe frame with running gear availble in the spring. If that'll help, let me know.

BTW - I'd rather have a Chevelle than a goat any day. Especially a rag top.

Please don't chop up the GTO.... :(

They are great vehicles, and someone out there would definitely take it off your hands and restore it to it's former glory.

Funny this should be up here today. I just had a student ask me if I knew where she and her husband could find his dream car. Yep, a 71 GTO.

A goat is the equivilant of an SS car (lemans being the equivilland of a malibu)- So add to that the face that its a CONVERTBILE GTO- The body ALONE even without frame is probaby work some decent cash. Why cut it up and waste that?

Sell it to someone who will restore it and enojoy it. Better yet- sell the frame & body to someone- use that cash to buy a bare frame.

And Personally, as for prefereance- I would take a 65-69 GTO over any year chevelle any day of the week- hands down. :-p

Like I (we) posted NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
YOU MUST BE JUST A KID ! NOT
A adult or someone with common scence..
I remember when I was such a young lad..
43 I am now.
when I was 18-20
I remember walking thru the junk yards full
of nothing but muscle cars. I would not think about what I was stepping on, like a rear bumper in the dirt, of now some one looking for that same bumper.
WHAT WE THREW AWAY (back when) ARGHHH!!
YOU even posted you are still gonna pull the frame on the goat
even after all the feedback you got on this

what a fool
thats all I got to say

As I said, GTO's are IMHO better looking, however, I would rather have the chevy mill. There isn't any chevelle i would rather have than an equivalent (condition, rarity, performance equipment, etc) GTO. Partly because they look better, and partly because you don't see nearly as many of them.

In one ear and out the other I guess. Im all for the... Some die to save the others way of thinking but I would restore the goat if its that nice.

1968-72 El Camino frames are boxed just like the convertibles. The difference is the wheelbase of 116" vs 112".
Has anyone modified an El Camino frame to be used on a convert ?

btw...I think it would be very difficult to just "box in" a hdtp frame. It's not just as easy as welding in a flat piece of steel. That piece is bent to fit the frame and the trans crossmember bolts onto it as well.

I'd contact Fatman Fabrications of Charlotte NC (http://www.fatmanfab.com/) for some input from a chassis builder. I'll bet it's not that hard to strengthen a coupe frame for use under a convert. Not suggesting just welding a flat piece to the inside of the rail but we're only talking about a 3 to 4 ft. section of frame which is relatively straight. Sectioning and beefing up frames is a common practice.

I'm just suggesting that it's worth looking into.
Just MHO.

I still can't understand this one.
I am sure you could find someone to trade a correct frame for the GTO.

There were only 678 made, how many are left? Even if it was a LeMans convertible, it would be a perfect starting point for a Judge clone. If you can't afford to fix the Chevelle properly...

pat mc,

Glad to hear you didn't cut the car up, even if it is just a LeMans.

Old cars are getting harder to come by and at some point will be almost impossible to find. My car is a little radical, but it was a piece of junk when I found it. Just keep looking at you'll find that frame. I needed one for my coupe and found a complete rolling chassis for $400.00 that was mint.

Good luck!!
