You could have them jet coated, the coating is supposed to last a long time but is fairly expensive.

I bought Summit headers (SUM-G9001) when I put the crate engine in. They're only $80 a pair, and you can get them ceramic coated for $100 bucks more. It was worth it to me not having to strip the shipping paint off and paint them.

I posted here before buying them and several people replied that they were happy with them. I've been driving the car almost daily now for two months or so and they still look as good as the day I got them.

robo3, Where did you get your headers jet coated in saginaw, what is the company's name? I am located in Saginaw and am interested in getting other parts coated if they do different colors?

Looking at those Summit headers... It says "Chevrolet 1967-1981 265-400" -- does that mean that headers do not differ between BB and SB? Would those fit onto the 327 in my wife's 70 SS? They have headers now, but they are completely rusted and ugly... For under $200 for a new set that was ceramic coated, I think that might be a good purchase if they will go right on...

Also -- does Summit do the ceramic coating then? I didn't see info on how to order them that way for the extra $100. [Edit: Ignore that -- found them as a different part number (SUM-G9001-9) -- I was thinking it was an "add on" to the original part or something. Now I see them propery.]

Thanks!

Also -- will the ceramic coating keep them black for years -- or is it just a given that they are going to rust?

In other words, if they are going to look like the rusted headers that she has now in a year or two, then it probably isn't worth it for us at this point...

John,
Big block and small block headers are different.

The ceramic coated headers are silver, in color, but maybe you can get black, but all I've ever seen is silver.

Yes it does last longer, its not perfect, but it is better than paint.

But honestly, I'd consider cleaning up the ones you have if they are solid, and in good shape.

If you follow the directions, on the High temp, paint, it will hold up pretty good.

If you follow the directions, and use a good paint.

So, even though the car was a 396, I assume that that is still the proper part now that it has a 327 in it. I think those should fit...

But honestly, I'd consider cleaning up the ones you have if they are solid, and in good shape.Well, they look pretty bad -- and have some dings in them. We're replacing the exhaust from the headers back (already bought it from another user here along with the MagnaFlow mufflers). So, I figured if we're doing that -- maybe doing the headers at the same time makes sense.

I'm thinking that, for under $200, maybe the new is the way to go... Maybe I'm overestimating what the work and paint involved in stripping and repainting the old ones would be though...

Well, I did some checking with Jet-Hot... Basically, they would want $279 to coat the existing headers. And, well, as I said, I just don't see this as being worth it based on the condition of the existing ones. Heck, to sell me NEW Jet-Hot headers directly, they only want $300 and that includes shipping. So, for the $21 difference, I would see no reason to have the existing ones coated (I'd end up paying even more after I paid to ship them to them)...

So, that being said, I'm fairly certain that I do want new headers for my wife's 70 SS, so now I just need to decide what to get.

Summit's ceramic coated ones (SUM-G9001-9) would be about $190 shipped. Jet Hot's coated ones would be $300 shipped. Is it worth the difference there? Anyone have some longer-term experience with the Summit ones? Worth it to go Summit and save the $110 difference for something else? Or go Jet Hot direct for the extra $110 so that I don't have to do it again in 5 years if they will actually last longer?

Thoughts?

Thanks!
