: Axle Saver bearing, and the aftereffects.

Well I put an axle save bearing into my drivers side 12 bolt, and it went in there REALLY tight. Like so tight I had to do pile drivers on the whole axle housing to drive it in there. Well it leaked, and was junk, so I bought a new axleshaft, and put it in with a new seal......but now the seal does not seat in the axlehousing well. I put some RTV where the seal seats on the axle tube, and I THINK it will hold, but am not totally sure. Anyone have any ideas??

New rear brakes, and axles seals. Hopefully I can get some stopping power in my car now. It was barely drivable before.

I went through the same exact thing myself. axle saver would not go in far enough. Then conventional seal too loose. Ended up with new Moser axles but new seal with a little RTV leaked just enough to screw up the brake shoes. New shoes, new seal and more RTV fixed it.

Are you saying that the 'saver bearings were too big O.D. wise and hogged out the housing, or they were too wide and messed up the stop inside the housing that positions the bearings on the axle?

So is there a better quality axle saver bearing or are they all bad?

I am going to be rebuilding my 8.2 soon, and will probably need new axles.

Probably different quality axle savers. I put one in the pass side about a year before the "problem" side and it fit fine and worked well. I later bought another at the same parts store for the driver side and it was clearly made different. It seemed to be too long and I had trouble getting the C clip in. Also maybe too large OD as it was hard to drive in and I think it hogged out the seal ID area, thus causing a new stock type seal to fit too loosely.

put a speedi-sleeve over worn axle area instead of axle savers.

OK, if you put a sleeve over the axle, what bearing do you install? The sleeve must add to the diameter of the shaft.

I have used a BCA or CR axle repair bearings on 12 bolt axles with no problems.
Bearing and seal are one piece and does stick out of the housing some. This is necessary to position the bearing slightly outward on a non worn area of the axle. You should still have plenty of room to push the axle in to engage the C-clip retainer.
