: How flamable are paint fumes?

I need to still put a coat of primer on my car after block sanding, and since I am in WI it is cold and I need some heat. Question is how carefull do I need to be with a heater while spraying so I don't light the place on fire?

Thanks,
Nick

As long as you don't let the fumes build up the risk should be minimal. Just keep a draft going somehow.

I would be VERY carefull. I would get the room hot, then turn the heater off, paint the car with a fan on to get most of the fumes out , then turn the heater back on when it's clear. I've seen fumes flash burn . It's not worth the risk just to have the heat on during a primer coat....Bill

Painting in an enclosed room with any heater that uses bare electrical elements or open flame is an invitation to an almost sure flash explosion.

71SSBB's suggestion works just fine.

Thanks for the replies. The heater will actually be in a separate room, but some fumes spill over to that room. My paint supplier thought that there was minimal risk, but said that he had seen a minor flash fire across the floor once, but that guy was using the heater right in the same room. Hopefully it will be warm enough that I can hold the temp above 60 long enough to finish painting with the heater off.

If it is an attached garage......is your garage insulated enough that you could crank up the heat in the house and let it spill over? Or hell.....Ghetto rig one of your registers. Take the cover off and literally pipe the heat in LOL. Just a thought. You don't have a furnace where you are working, with a pilot light do you?
