tony r Feb 15th, 04, 10:01 PM hey Storm not trying to be smart ass but do u know anything about engines?? That motor looks like a good one But??? isn`t there a performance engine shop near u in N.J.??? if u have any problems with that motor do u know what a pain it will be to get things resolved??? shipping costs alone would suck!!!!!! id find a local shop stop in there from time to time and chat with people buying or that have purchased engines there and see if they are happy with the costs and workmanship of that place!!! i have a shop next town over from me that i have purchased over 20 motors from in past 15 years and one new one shelled out on me during break in , they took it back and found the main bearings(new) were no good!! gave me a whole new motor no hasal no bs!!the 383 in my 71 chevelle they built for me 500 hp 4000$ have drivin it hard for 5 yrs now no problems they also give me a 3 yr warranty on any motor i buy performance or stock cant beat that!!!! but if i were u i would definetly find a local shop!!!!!Tony graemlins/thumbsup.gif
71350SS Feb 15th, 04, 10:12 PM Storm,
I seem to recall some people having bad problems with motors from Arizona bought over Ebay, not saying that applies here but I would be extremely cautious.I agree with Tony, try to find a local shop or for that price buy a crate motor.
New68SS Feb 15th, 04, 10:36 PM I've got just over $800.00 in a mostly stock 350 rebuild for my wifes Z28.
I bet with another $1000.00 I (and you) could build something really fun.
Listen to these guys and visit the local shop.
Dwayne
storm Feb 15th, 04, 10:50 PM i know a little about engines not much if i get one mostly complete i can install it get it all hook up and running but to build one or if what a engine builder say whats inside is good i wouldnt have a clue. anyone know a reliable shop in new jersey that can build me one? i only have the 307 that came out of the car if the require a core. dwayne let hook up and start building im due for a vacation thanks storm
tony r Feb 15th, 04, 10:58 PM Storm toss that 307 or sell it on ebay cause your local shop probably wont want it and go with a good 350 4 bolt main! if your gonna drop around 3700 deffinetly go with a steel crank and forged pistons and rods, the best money u can spend on a motor is in the heads and cam thats where most of your power comes from GOOD flow!! i have had alot of luck with dart heads and comp cams!! just my opinion others may disagree. should be able to get a motor like that one on ebey in your area for 3700 easy!!!! good luck bud!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
storm Feb 15th, 04, 11:03 PM thats just it i look on e bay and the guys here basicly said stay away from out of state motors go local they are still replying with good tips and advice now if i can get a team chevelle member to build me one ill be good to go . storm
71350SS Feb 15th, 04, 11:30 PM storm, what are you looking for? there are alot of choices out there.Chevy has a crate 350 330 HP thats around 1500 or less.Check out the crate motors here www.sdpc2000.com (http://www.sdpc2000.com)
Or find a good core and a machine shop and build your own.
Just take your time and pick the motor YOU want.Happy hunting graemlins/thumbsup.gif Oh yeah, how,s the Front end rebuild going ?
tony r Feb 15th, 04, 11:31 PM hey storm did a search and found this www.patmusi.com (http://www.patmusi.com) i met this guy at several drag races and he seemed like a nice guy! looks like hes been building motors for a long time and close to u!! call them up tell them what u have to spend and what kind of horse power your lookin for and im sure they could help u out!!!!! graemlins/waving.gif
10bolt Feb 15th, 04, 11:38 PM another reason I might stay away is becuase of seller history. He hasn't made any transactions on Ebay yet. I would hate to be his first and find out he is a fraud.
Bomber '67 Feb 16th, 04, 12:56 AM Storm, I can't help you specifically on a local N.J. builder, but here's a tip: Go to the drags and cruise nights and start asking who builds engines in the area. You should be able to narrow down who will be on your short list. Arizona and EBay engines just never seem to have worked out. I wouldn't want to be the first to "test" the world class builder who has no feedback and is doing a private auction. I'm very worried about an engine shop that has *been* on EBay since August (at least under that name), yet still has a 0 feedback? Does that mean that you would be the first customer? I dunno.
Good luck, Thomas
doggy69 Feb 16th, 04, 7:29 AM Pat Musi is a good guy he built my 540 for me. Ask him if he has anything used around and he can build you a monster cheap.
Moloko Feb 16th, 04, 8:22 AM You could just order the Gm 350HO motor. I was going to but then decided to build my own. Its a good motor though.
storm Feb 16th, 04, 7:56 PM i was going with the 350 330 hp deluxe crate too but my son decided to see about getting more hp so were going to shop a little bit pat musi yes i will give him a call i went on his web site and he,s big dollars but ill call and see whats up. other wise front end completely redone all new tried to fix steering gear shaft seal no luck so a new box went in.went to install it saturday and saw the rag joint was stripped so now i need a new rag joint.(already ordered) thanks to the wife. so im ready to drop in the engine. anybody in new jersey up for building one with storm in new jersey??
tony r Feb 16th, 04, 8:28 PM hey storm, is the car yours or your sons? how old is he? yeah musi is pretty steep but u dont need a full on race engine either and maybe they build milder ones??do a web search for other local shops(smaller) in n.j. im sure there are more!!!!
storm Feb 16th, 04, 8:57 PM son is 19 i guess he,s gonna have to start calling but i hope someone would recommend someone so i dont get taken advantage of. if not i still will go with the crate motor. any one got any idear on what a 350 400hp should run me?? im looking to spend around 3000 to 3500 . thanks
storm Feb 16th, 04, 9:09 PM tony r did you decide on the stripes? i think you should go with the ghost checkers thats the way i think i,ll go. i just need more info on them.
tony r Feb 16th, 04, 10:00 PM hey storm u sure u wanna put a 19 uear old behind 400 hp?? i dont know your son so dont think im judgin but all the 19 yr old kids around here couldnt handle it!!! ive seen alot of bad things happen with kids and hot rods!! any way try jegs or summit they also have crate engines in all hp`s and price ranges should get 350-400 easy for 3500!!
tony r Feb 16th, 04, 10:02 PM p.s. think im gonna go with the baldwin design i like how different it is and never see any like it around anywhere in tri state area!!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
GRN69CHV Feb 17th, 04, 11:20 AM Storm,
Where are you located, North, Central or South NJ?
Do you want to stay small block or go with a Big Block? You can get more power and durability from even a small big block than a punched out small block. I know of a couple of 396, 402's that may be available.
storm Feb 17th, 04, 2:16 PM i have been looking at 350'3 383's 396's basically every thing. im from browns mills nj which is pretty central. let me know about that 396 email me at antlip@comcast.net with the info
and this is the 19 replying about 350 to 400 HP... i was thinking that was going conservatitve i been riding go carts, dirtbikes, and quads all my life so i have alot of respect for power and right now i drive a 1991 firebird around graemlins/thumbsup.gif
doggy69 Feb 17th, 04, 3:10 PM Im 17 and have 700hp so age shouldnt always be associated with responsibility. I got all of my tickets in my 55hp geo metro.
storm Feb 17th, 04, 4:40 PM thanks doggy69.....your 17? we got to go cruise sea side this summer when i get my chevelle done
