: super chevy chevelle
bri2203 Nov 4th, 04, 10:40 PM Every owner of a 70 chevelle needs to go buy the december issue of super chevy. A 1970 chevelle big block 468, lowered, 14"/13" disc brake and 1.75/1.5 sway bars, 17" TTII
WHERE DO YOU BUY 1.75/1.5" sway bars? i want them!!!
webfoot Nov 4th, 04, 11:47 PM Was that the procharged one that only ran a 12.5 in the 1/4 mi? He must've done a burnout about halfway down the track!
bri2203 Nov 5th, 04, 1:32 AM yes.....where o get those sway bars? anyone know how much it was lowered? i don;t know if i want to lower mine 2 or 3 inches
David Bates Nov 5th, 04, 6:00 AM Why do people insist on installing such large front and rear sway bars for the street? Global West has proved you don't even need a rear bar to pull over .9 g's on a skid pad if the suspension is set up properly.
bri2203 Nov 5th, 04, 3:11 PM handling?????? thats why they are call anti sway bars, they are not for traction
I went from 1" sway bar to a 1.25 inch sway bar on my s-10 and the handleing differeece was huge. I miss my s-10
Jack Eastman Nov 5th, 04, 4:03 PM In my research bigger sway bars stop providing big returns at a certain point. Meaning does improved handling stop at a certain point? Do you get better performance from 1 inch rear vs. 1.5 inch rear. Here is their article. http://www.globalwest.net/handling_charts%20abody.htm
BowtieAaron Nov 5th, 04, 4:06 PM yeah but that was on the front. the rear one, u dont even need if ur suspension is set up right, like David said.
i bet that thing has the worst ride ever.
its def a nice car, but u dont need bars that big.
aaron
Jack Eastman Nov 5th, 04, 4:07 PM Another comment. I think David Bates was referring to handling. .9g on a skidpad is about doing circles before losing it not drag style traction.
bri2203 Nov 8th, 04, 6:47 PM OK still doesn't answer my question.. i would like to get a 1.5+ sway bar in front and a 1" in rear. I don't car abour ride, my daily driver is a lowrider
Jack Eastman Nov 8th, 04, 8:19 PM I did a quick search for custom sway bars for muscle cars and got a few hits. Here is one you can try: http://www.quickor.com/pages/custom.html
Also hotrodstohell might be able to make some up for you. I haven't ever seen any of the big guys like hotchkis or anybody offer them so I can't help you there. Good luck --jack
bri2203 Nov 8th, 04, 8:51 PM thanks Jack
I think I am going to either buy an 1 1/4 or get a trans Am bar. Good enough.. I don't have 300+ to spend on a custom sway bar
thanks everyone
Gokou Nov 9th, 04, 4:16 PM All in all, very nice car, although I agree with the others that the sway bars are way too big. I don't doubt at some point that 1.75" front sway bar will tear the mounting areas right out of the frame! Sway bars that big tell me his combo is mismatched, probably needs more spring rate. I'm guessing the car also has some very odd oversteer habits with a rear bar that large, I found that as I increased the rear bar size there were improvements up to a point and then at a 1" bar the car suddenly started to snap oversteer on corner exit when you applied throttle. Not a good trait on a street car!
Giant bars also produce very odd and unpredictable behavior over bumps, as the large bars more solidly tie one side of the suspension to the other side. Hit a bump on one side of the car, and you disturb the other size. This effect increases as you increase the bar diameter. This can produce very scary and unpredictable behavior over bumps/irregularities in the road, especially in a hard turn.
Another thing, I'm guessing the article meant to say 13"/12" brakes instead of 14"/13". My 13" Baers "barely" fit in my 17" Torq-Thrust IIs-- the same wheels that car is running. You aren't gonna fit a 14" rotor and a PBR caliper in a 17" TT2 wheel, there just isn't enough clearance between the caliper and the wheel.
Still, a very nice car. The article and pictures pushed me "off the fence" as it were and made me switch my factory sport wheel to a nice Momo piece. Next up, some Sparco Milano Prestige seats. Mmmmm, comfy...
