: 275 60 15 and 235 60 15
Aaron Nov 8th, 04, 9:00 AM I planning on getting some new wheels and tires over the winter. I currently run 15x8 rallies with 235 60's all the way around on my 67 chevelle. I would like a taller and wider tire on the rear of the velle. Would a 275 60 15 work, or would a 255 60 15 be better? Also I like the Cragar SS wheel, but am hearing alot of negatives about the good old uni-lug. Anyone suggest a good 5 spoke other than the TTIIs?
Thanks
ToocoolZ28 Nov 8th, 04, 11:34 AM Those are the same sizes I run on my 70, check pics in my Sig, I dont know if they will fit on a 67 but I dont have ANY vibration or problems with the unilugs.

BowtieAaron Nov 8th, 04, 12:32 PM my buddy runs 275's on his 71, looks really good. i think 15*8 with 4" of bs is enough. or u can go 15*8 with 4.5"bs and run a 295.
im running cragars on my velle, i love them, but uni-lug sucks, expecially if u take your wheels off alot. oh, and i dont think they make a rim with anything more than 3.5" of bs. but i could be wrong.

aaron My 15 by 8s have 4 1/4 backspacing.

BowtieAaron Nov 8th, 04, 8:09 PM my 15*10's have only 3.5 and the 15*6's have like 2.5.
well i guess cragar does make rims with more BS.

Sgtpop Nov 9th, 04, 6:16 AM I have 275-60-15s on the rear of my 67, and 235-70-15s on the front. The rear is 4.5 bs. No problems at all, front or back. Weld wheels I put the spinners on that I had on a corvette to change the look of the rim. Will prob go to Cragars before long.
slicksty7 Nov 9th, 04, 8:59 PM Aaron I run 15x8 standard rally in the front with a P265/50R/15. In the back I run a 15x8 with a 4-1/2" back space rally with a P295/50R/15. There is maybe 3/4" of tire clearance on either side. I don't run any air shocks just the stock height. But I do run a overhead panhard bar [maybe helps a little]. anyway the 67 sure looks great! and I forgot to mention my tires are Dunlop Qualifiers. graemlins/thumbsup.gif Good luck!
Aaron Nov 11th, 04, 9:09 PM Thanks guys for the info. My chevelle is lower 2 inches in the rear and around 3 inches in the front. I have a little tire rub on the front around the outside of the inner fender. I have the 15x8 rallies with 4 inches of back spacing. I have around a 1/4 of spacing between the fender lip on the rear and the sidewall of the tire. My idea of a bigger tire is for traction reasons. I getting a lot of tire spin out of the hole. I have a rear sway bar and boxed control arms.
Is my info correct reguarding the tire size.
70 series = tallest tire
60 series = middle of the road
50 series = Wide effect look
The first number also dicates the height as well.

Thanks Try American Racing 200S. Mine were 17" (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/396guy/600x400.jpg) but they come in 15" and 16" as well I believe.
300man Nov 12th, 04, 9:28 AM My 67 has 15x8 covette rally wheels all around and up front are 225/60 with no tire rub. Out back are 255/60 and have about the same 3/8 in.
clearence to the inside edge of the fender. So if i wanted to go bigger to 275/15 i would have to increase my back spacing. Assuming i have 4in. now, 4 1/2 would be right for 275's with 8 in. rims. For me going bigger in the rear is something i wouldn't do because i think that cornering ability would decrease due to taller tire hieght.(more sidewall flex) Also a taller tire will create a taller gear ratio lowering cruising rpm and could decrease acceleration depending on what motor/cam combo you are running.
You might be better off going to a 8 1/2 in rim with more back spacing to even out the tire hieght issue.
Aaron Nov 12th, 04, 1:18 PM 300man, I know a wider wheel would help traction. So you are saying a taller tire would not help? How many companies out there make a 8 and 1/2 inch wheel?
300man Nov 12th, 04, 3:00 PM wider tires should help with traction, but as you go wider and wider with the same wheel width there are cirtain trade-offs. You said you lowered your car 2 inches in the rear so i don't think you want to create a taller tire diameter by sticking a 275/60 tire on a 8 inch rim. A tall tire won't hurt traction but it may not have the "look" you want in the end. A 255/50 may be the way to go. If you go to a 275/50 4.5 inches of BS would be needed. 8.5 x 15 inch wheels are hard to find but the torque thrust D is one.
